So after losing my mare, there is now just the two geldings which are turned out together. One is mine, one is my friends.

They seem to be getting on ok except for friend’s horse keeps ripping my boy’s rug!! He is wearing a very old turnout over another rug to protect the other rug so I am not overly bothered about the rug that is being ripped - but it is getting a new rip in it daily!! Not sure what I will do when this one is completely destroyed.

I don’t really want to separate them if I can help it but how can I stop him doing this?! I’ve tried NAF no bite in the past and not sure it really did anything… also tried spraying jungle formula all over the rug yesterday which smells horrible and I imagine tastes pretty bad too… but there was another rip this morning! ?

It would be a very expensive thing to happen if it wasn’t for the fact I am using old rugs but it does mean I can’t buy any new rugs for him to wear on top. Other horse is bigger than my boy and was gelded at 4 so whether it’s this caused by the mouthy behaviour I don’t know but he is the boss and I assume he is just doing it to move my boy around. They did fight when the mare was here but seem better together now it’s just the two of them…

anybody got any good suggestions to stop this? I wish I could make the rug static or electric or something!! That would work!!

My friend has loads of trouble with this (she has four young Arabs). She has her boys in cheap, no-fill "top" rugs whenever they need to be rugged up. Bit of a faff, but there you go! She has tried cribbox on her rugs but I wouldn't recommend that!

My boy's friend would remove his rugs for him. We'd keep finding his rugs, still done up on the floor and a naked, fully clipped Archie. We couldn't work out what he was doing. It was only when his friend moved to a new yard and the rug loss stopped we realised what had been happening. There's very little you can do unfortunately. I'd persevere with the cheap turnout over the top and maybe paint it with some cribbox so it tastes awful? It will probably wash off after a while thought so you'll need to keep doing it,

We stopped my lad taking tail flaps off by painting cribbox on the seams so he stopped grabbing them as ponies ran past.

I think I will have to give the cribbox a go! Is it very messy to use? I wish this was just tail flaps - it seems to be wherever he can grab - usually on the bum or shoulder.

My Arab used to destroy his own rugs and his field mates rugs it was a right pain luckily he outgrew it, sometimes some sort of toy in the field can help some horses will play with an old football or a space hopper.

My friends arab stallion has an old rug they put in the field when his out, he plays with it for hours chucking it around and chewing it.

I used the nettex anti crib gel. It's a clear gel so not messy but make sure you don't get it on your hands if you bite your nails! Or if you need to prepare food.

I found Cribox too thick and sticky for something I wanted to handle. I used hairspray as I had some to hand (i use it for platting), it tastes grim and I'm presuming as you spray it on people's heads it's not mega toxic.

Seemed to do the trick but needed to be reapplied once a week
