RUG RIPPING - help..............

I have 2 geldings who love to play all the time. Part of the game is for the older one to rip the rugs or hood of the younger one. I don't want to split them up but any ideas of how i can stop him wanting to rip the rugs of my youngster?

I currently turn out the youngster with his normal turnout rug and then put an old nearly shredded liteweight rug on top. I have tried spraying some mcnasty on the rug but i can't do that everyday and i can't stand breathing in the stuff!

Any ideas gratefully received!

I had exactly the same problem and as well as wrecked rugs my horse ended up with a fractured leg!! Needless to say we had to seperate them which I hated doing but the playing had just gone too far.
Back to the rugs, I had to bite the bullet after all my rugs were shredded and buy a Rambo as they are made out of Ballistic nylon. It broke my heart turning him out with his very expensive rug on but it lasted 3 seasons before they were seperated without a single rip and the other horse use to swing off it. Full necks were a no no though as I couldnt risk his rug being pulled over his head or something similar.
I did also mix mustard and warm water and put it in a spray bottle, I think that detered him a bit but it was a pain having to spray it all the time. None of the over the counter sprays did anything.
 
Tail Gators stop chew spray works (deterred a hardened cribber at our old yard) but absolutely stinks and anyone with dodgy breathing would need to apply it out in the open air...
