Got to the yard Tuesday morning to put my horse out and the owner of another horse in the same field laid into me as I got out of my car saying that she had been on holiday for a week and yet another of her rugs has been trashed and she can't afford to keep buying her horse new rugs!!

Errrr now I was caught off guard by this and just told her to talk to the YO about the horses being moved around, she marched off in a huff and ranted to the YO.

Now here's the facts, this woman is loaded! has her own business, goes on holiday at least 4 - 5 times a year, owns a chalet (skiing) in europe, France? boyfriend drives a Porsche, etc etc etc, her horse has the crappiest, oldest, dirtiest rugs on the whole yard and his rugs were being ripped BEFORE my horse went into 'her' field, my horse isn't the only one in the field, there is currently 1 other horse, been known to rip rugs in the past.

My horse and her horse are actually great friends in the field and play a lot, I have seen her horse 'buzzing' mine when I turn out as he wants to play and then neighs his head off when I bring mine in. They are all geldings together and have a great time playing. I have sewn up the rip on my MW turnout and so far have been lucky with the heavyweight, but both are good brands and relatively new. The rug belonging to the 3rd horse in the field is fairly new and a good make and doesn't have a mark on it. I am not sure if my horse is starting the ripping as they all play together, no one has actually seen him rip any rugs, but I wouldn't put it past him to play with the stuffing that is hanging out the back, rather than get the rug repaired she just puts it back on with the stuffing all over the place which I think is like a red rag to a bull! and a good 'toy' to play with!

YO said it's tough that's what happens especially with geldings they play, rugs get ripped, it's winter, not a lot of grass about, they all want to come in early, get bored etc etc. I have been putting mine out a bit later when I can after he has had breakfast and a hay net, then bringing in as early as I can so he's not too bored! I have also bought rug repellant for YO to spray on other horses rug as it's on full livery.

So what's your opinion on this? Owner thinks I should buy her horse a new rug! YO has given her my old Masta rug, which has only been used about 3 times(!) but my horse has grown out of, to take to local tack shop to trade in for one that fits her horse!!

Why though should I be responsible for the rug, my horse got kicked a few weeks ago by her horse, no doubt hers as he kicks out, and I now have a £120 vets bill. I haven't asked her to pay that as I didn't actually see it happen, I told her that but she just ignored that bit and marched off to complain to YO!!! When I was hosing my horses leg twice a day for over a week everyone at the yard was concerned and asked how he was, she was the only person that didn't comment once not even asking why I may be hosing my horse and not able to ride!

Oh rant over, maybe I am all wrong here not sure what the etiquette is on this?? Phew feel better now got it off my chest though!

Id tell owner to F off in that many words..
Horses rip rugs.. thats life, they get caught up on summit.. other rugs.. hawthorns, fences..

I think you did the best thing by telling her to go to YO.

My opinion is that horses will be horses, if she wants to avoid this then she should go somewhere that does individual turnout. I certainly wouldn't be replacing her rug!

Maybe you'll be lucky & she'll have a strop & go elsewhere

I'm not sure there is a particular etiquette with this its down to the individuals to come to an agreement. Having been on the side where my own horse has had the rug ripped off his back I was disappointed that the owner didn't offer an apology or compensation as they didn't share a field, it happened as my horse passed by the others stable on the way to his own stable.

If my horse trashed someone elses rug I would offer compensations but thats just me, I think it s a courtesy. Yes we know horses can be horses but I wouldn't want bad feeling.

Horses will be horses. By putting them out together we risk injury/damage to rugs etc. Thats just the facts of life when you have a horse.

If you havve a horse, you should be prepared for the costs involved. Thankfully mine don't trash rugs, but one does out grow them weekly it feels!

Doubt she will move as she has a good deal going at the yard she is at in that she can come and go as she pleases and her horse is just done for her. Must admit I have asked other liveries their opinions and they are in agreement with YO that it's just horses and it happens, I think if she was a nicer person I'd be a bit more sympathetic but she really is a spoilt brat, even though she is in her 30's!

Just read post on Stable yard section and someone used mustard and water sprayed on rugs I wouldn't mind doing that but I don't 'do' the horse each day it's done by YO, I gave the YO the rug repellant stuff (made by NAFF) See again I am spending money on her bloody horse, arrrgggghhh! But I can't keep checking that she has sprayed it on each day, someone at the yard said that it may even be the 3rd horse in the field doing it, but I don't want to involve his owner as she is really nice and would just get stressed, (yes more than me!) about the whole thing!

Just tell her to go away! surprised YO gave her your old masta you could have sold it 2nd hand so not sure that is on either. Would she rather horse in stable 24/7

Have to say you lot make me feel really good that mine are at home (I know am v. lucky!) just means everything is my responsibility

Tough luck I'm afraid. It is one of the hazards of turning horses out together. And whilst it's mighty annoying (I'd be bloomin fuming too) there really isn't much you can do about it. She may want to look at spraying something like 'No Bite' on to her rugs, or librally rubbing them with some chilli peppers as it does help.

It's always a cause of strain between owners - and how deep someone's pockets are is not the issue - but as I say, I'm not sure you can really always avoid it.

My horse got kicked last Feb and sustained a broken leg! Horse that did it was a confirmed rug ripper, he used to grab hold of my horses rug and not let go even while I was turning out and hadn't even got my horse's headcollar off! It was also a kicker, thankfully it's now sold as apart from that it wasn't suitable for the owner, so I can see both sides.

BUT my horse has decent rugs and apart from his Weatherbeeta which is about a year old getting 1 tear which I have repaired my rugs have stood up to the wear and tear well, to be honest the rugs this livery puts on her horse are almost paper thin they are so old, I would think if one was caught on a fence or ripped while the horse was rolling, which is does a lot, it wouldn't take much for the tear to get much bigger in a short space of time.

I suppose it's also her attitude to me though, if she had spoken to me in a more civilized way I would be more sympathetic. Then again she has the attitude of talking down to everyone and isn't the most popular person on the yard!!

Also as no one has actually SEEN my horse do it she is just assuming it's mine, then again hers and mine love to play rough! Also noticed mine has bites on his neck, forgot to say that bit, so he is getting roughed up too, and I could have got a pretty decent rug for the cost of my recent vet bill!!
We have a very good and reasonable rug cleaning and repair service locally which I have used when my rug got ripped, why can't she do that? It's what everyone else has to do?

Yes when you put it like that you're right, if her rug is crap to begin with and she's not even a nice person I wouldn't worry. It would be galling to replace it and she ends up with a far better rug.

YES! You know what old rugs get like, like old annoracks, the fabric seems to get really thin and if it tears you can just rip it with your bare hands like paper, well that's what hers are like!!!

If she's been on holiday, and no one saw it, how do people know it was your horse?!

I think by having a go at you, she put herself at a disadvantage straight away. Also, technically, your YO has stolen that rug from you?!

Etiquette where rugs are concerned is - Every man for himself!

I'm a YO and the absolute bane of my life is people who buy cheap, useless rugs which just do not stand up to herd playing. This is the one thing that I stress over and over and over again that if they do buy cheap rugs - they WILL get trashed! Thankfully my liveries generally take heed after their first rug starts to resemble a big bag of candy floss!

You are not responsible for her rug. She is responsible for buying something which is up to the job and I have no sympathy for her.

HOrse kick and bite....my horse has had a leg broken and rugs ripped- and ive seen my horse kisck another in the foeld and nip the rug also.....its the law of the field!!!

Annoying as it may be...I dont expect anyone to pay if their horse rips mines rug.....I wouldnt want to pay anyone either if mine ripped theirs.....its no good her getting aggro with you either, what are you supposed to do? Have stiff words with your horse and tell him never to do it again?!

It happens with horses, tell her to
a) get over it and
b) buy her own land if she dislikes putting up with the stuff that comes with sharing turnout.

It is a really difficult one if you haven't seen the 'crime' happen. The pony next to my mare ripped her rug (not a cheap rubbish one either) by grabbing her over the stable wall, twice, both times i saw it happen. I told her i was going to have it repaired and did she want to contribute and got totally ignored.
I thought that was a bit pants but didn't make an issue out of it.
On the other hand, my mare ripped another horses tail flap, i saw it happen and took the rug to get it repaired.
I suppose it just depends on the person really and also if they are just assuming it was your horse that did it.
I think the yo had a cheek handing over your masta to the other owner though, it's not her property to give away.

I think you have your horse in with other horses , you have to accept the consequences i.e. kicks and rugs being trashed. my horse got kicked the first time we put in the field and we saw the other horse do it. I was very annoyed as he couldn't be ridden etc for a couple of weeks and vet bills, but there's no way i would have asked them to pay the vet bill (they did offer, but i declined, its not their fault) and the same goes for rug ripping. Horses play.

I would have told her where to go.

Why on earth did your YO give her your old Masta? Its not her property to give away. That would have annoyed me more than the woman's ranting.
