It' that time of year again... where you spend your time trying to decide what rug is required... and if the one currently on is correct!

I failed last night... didn't quite expect the harsh frost and left his lordship in med stable rug with no neck. He was cold and grumpy this morning... I'll dig his fleece snuggy hood out an heavyweight so you can thank me for the heatwave that is bound to follow

Where are you where a heavy weight is required?

I strongly suspect Polly has PSSM and last night she had a fleece on (unclipped) but she was stressy and box walking this morning, which she’s not been doing since coming in overnight over a week ago. It was 5degrees here first thing, so far colder than I’d anticipated. I will dig out her stable rug today, but just a 50g to start with.

It's been really windy with us.
Til hiding in shelter despite having a 100g rug on. She feels the cold easily now. - I need to find her neck cover as last time she wore it, it ended up in next doors field so I refused to give it back to her (kidding, the weather abated so she didn't need it).

Tal only has a no fill or 100g with neck that fit him. I've got heavy weights, 100g with no neck but they're all the next size up. He had 100g on last night and is munching hay. - I'm trying not to rug him if I can as prefer to underrug. I need to get a 50g.

My fat hairy native microcob obviously warmed up in the early hours by zooming around the field leaving skid marks everywhere!

She is already eating as if she's going to be left on the Dales with just moss and rocks to eat all winter. In reality my winter field is knee high in grass and I need a cold winter. Plus she needs a clip.

PSSM mare in 150g probably could have done with bit more. Baby cob unclipped in 50g just to keep him clean really. I have shelters but they only use them to escape flies.

PSSM + rugs + autumn is definitely a game of roulette

My Fell pony with an Irish clip had a 50gm turnout on overnight. Not sure of the temperature but there was a a very light frost.

I think that was about right, but thinking I might need a 100gm if I keep him clipped all winter.

It was -2 this morning when I went out. Although the weather looks set to warm up again!

Chester is fully clipped and does feel the cold, he quickly starts to lose condition if cold.

Ray, the 2 year old, on the other hand is staying naked as long as I can. He's not been rugged yet and has been fine.

50g on last night, unclipped but out 24/7. She felt OK this morning but not overly warm. Was down to 3C. Its warmer today so no fill in the day then 50g tonight. Literally all anyone was saying at the yard today was "which rug are you using?" 🤣

Will be clipping in a fortnight anyway so will get the liners out and up to 100g once clipped. 200g for below zero or lots of rain I think. She's a new horse though so not sure how she'll go.

Ours are going to be out at night and in during the day over winter so we need heavier turnouts for night conditions!

It was 2 degrees this morning, and whilst Dex was warmer when I got there I think he got chilly overnight as my god, did he have the @rse this morning!
I only have a 100g though or a thermatex - is the thermatex less heavy then the 100g?

PSSM cob was in 100g last night, and was cosy but not overheated. (Fully clipped in September but already woollier than she was before I clipped.)

Yes its open weave so will be less than 100g stable rug x

I'll be really interested to hear others replies to this as I've usually found the thermatex is warmer than a 100g stable rug. Maybe just put them both on 🤣

I think it was a bit of a shock for them all. Last weekend down here we were at 25 degrees not zero!

I have put a thermatex under a stable rug before.

I err on the side of caution and hope for the best! If it’s only going to be cold for a couple of hours, I go with the thinner rug. Mine had a 50g on last night and I’m pretty sure she’d rather be comfortable most of the time, even if she was a bit chilly this morning.

Same here, I tend to err on the side of under-rugging, but give him some hay and more grass than he'd usually be allowed. I figure that if they're cold, at least they can shiver or move around to warm up. But if they're too hot they can't take their own rug off*

It was 1 degree at yard this morning. My unclipped, veteran mare had her thermatex on overnight - she feels the cold but was fine when I got to her except… I told her NOT to lie down… she didn’t listen an now the thermatex is covered in shavings and poo 😩

I’ve got companion pony and 3 year old unclipped and they won’t have a rug on all Winter! Then my 21 year old ridden has just been clipped (trace with all of neck off) and in 50g. She only goes into 200g if hunter clipped and below 5! Might pop an extra 50g on her if below freezing and she is out 24/7 most of the Winter 😊

Dex is in his thermatex tonight, and I know for a fact it will be smothered by tomorrow if the state of his body every morning is anything to go by... I am terrified of the day he greys out.
Hopefully the Thermatex stands up well to being washed, but I won't hold my breath.

Get some snuggy hoods and rugs great for keeping them cleaner in winter and they are not too thick either.

I haven't rugged yet, they've got lots of natural shelter and both have been growing a good coat for weeks. I will rug the older boy if it gets wet & cold but while it's still sunny he can stay naked. The other one has a coat like a grizzly bear so he never gets cold enough to wear a rug.

Thin skinned, thin coated tb, prone to lose weight but also a very hot horse so it's a real balancing act. Unclipped as not bothered to start growing a winter coat yet. Out in the day naked still. It's been very sunny but cold here with a bit of a wind. 100g at night as it's apparently down to 1°c last night and tonight.
