rug rubbing main

Sorry stupid fone!!
How'd I do it?! Horseware rugs & hoods- didn't matter if it was rhino amigo whatever asong as it was horseware it didn't rub!
In really cold times I out a weatherbeeta full neck on top of rhino full neck & still no rubbing.
Tried the sewing satin/fleece/cotton inside hood & that was rubbish still rubbed!
Hope that helps!

This pony wintered out in 2010/2011, started off in a Weatherbeeta Taka with half (snug) neck

then changed to a Masta Check Tech combo.

Mane FULLY intact. There's a bit in front of her withers lying on the wrong side, but her mane was not rubbed. (She was in foal in this pic incase anyone feels the need to nit pick about her weight !!!!!)

This Welsh D lived out last winter in a Weatherbeeta Genero Combo

Again, some of her mane is on the wrong side but is fully intact and not rubbed. (photos taken in April, she is a growing 4 year old).

This pony started off in a m/w masta with a standard neck during November 2011, but as a growing 2yo/rising 3yo, it was starting to slip back onto her withers. I changed it for a Fal Bulldog with a snug neck.

I don't use neck covers/combos because I don't clip and I have silly fine skinned horses that rub easily.

However Bossy's Bibs have made a new mane cover thing. I have not used one (see above ;) ) but I do like their shoulder bib things which are fantastic.

As theWildOne suggested, sew a strip of silky material into the neck cover/over the whithers or wherever it rubs.

I find the best thing is to hit the charity shops and look for the old fashioned type of head scarves.....the type you see the queen wearing! Can get them for next to nothing and they work a treat.

I use Mark Todds with separate necks which have never rubbed their manes to any degree (evidenced by J's 4 foot monstrosity). I don't find full neck rugs sit as well and rub more.

Snuggy hoods do offer a "up to the ears" neck cover :)

I'm wearing dark glasses, but I'm not a member of the rug mafia...

in reply to OP - I had my Welsh D in a Weatherbeeta Genero Combo most of last winter and at night a Weatherbeeta HW combo, sometimes the Genero at night if it was really cold - his mane was intact at the end of the winter - the Genero is a good price to, my mare has a Fal Pro and that rubs her mane out, I definately find keeping the mane and rug neck really clean helps, I also use pig oil on my manes,
we have tried the bibs and neck covers from snuggy hoods etc and if anything they made it worse.
my new boy arrives in two weeks and I will be showing him so need his mane and dont want to risk it so am going to try rugging him with no neck and seeing how it goes :/
but when he is fully clipped - I will just rug him more to keep him warm enough that his neck dosent get cold, but if I do decide to get a neck rug it will definately be a Weatherbeeta :) hope this helps

I also found a horse head one but don't want to upset any delicate sensibilities ;) :D

the only thing i find when they have necks on his rugs with detachable necks rather than fixed necks and lots of mane and tail conditioner so its really slippery :) keeps my horses manes in tact :)

ive given up trying to find one that doesnt rub. My girl will be out with no neck cover this winter as its taken 9 months for her mane to even START to look ok after last winter. She was in a snuggyhood with no face and it killed her mane of at the roots completely!

wow thanks for all the really helpful replies :)
iv'e read them all thanks and will be hitting the charity shops and have already bought mane and tail conditioner :)

heres one of mine sporting his rug complete with very cruel neck cover ;)
but it keeps his ears warm too :p

ROFLMAO :D He looks like he's wearing a shower cap !:D:D:D

Rhino, is there some way we could attach that horse head "mafia smiley" to the rug mafia's siggys...."Beware. Member of the HHO Rug Mafia." plus mafia smiley ?
We need another one for the barefoot taliban :D

My horse came with the bottom half of his mane missing, not sure if it was the amigo with detachable neck that he had spent winter in or his breast plate. Neck and breast plate are both gone and after 4 months it's about 2 inches long, sticks up and looks a right mess. No neck rugs are going on him this winter.
