It's that time of year when I am having to cover my poor sensitive little lad head to toe in fly buster rugs (got the rambo sweet itch hoodie on him at the mo) and he is being rubbed bald!

I'm at my wits end. I daren't leave it off, he gets eaten alive and then turns himself inside out scratching but he's going bald on his shoulders, flanks and in front of the girth on the lower part of his shoulders.

He looks terrible! I've tried a bib, in fact i've tried a few and none seem to work. I don't know, you do everything you can to make them feel more comfortable and it causes other problems.

If any of you have a solution PLEASE tell me. I am one desperate woman and my horse is one sad looking individual. I even got one of those Boett rugs, rubbed him raw between the legs and shoulders despite bib on front end and sheepskin covers on the leg straps.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but would you be able to keep him in during the day and then turn him out at night?

Alternativily, have you tried any fly reppelant sprays to keep the flys away?

I think that there is a collar type thing which you can put on which as a very strong fly reppelant on, but haven't ever used this so can't recommend it!

I'll give it a go but the Boett was lovely and soft, even stuck a ton of lenor in the wash. Didn't do a bit of good.

Hmm, right, will order one now. Financial haemorrhage continues.....

Cheers. Nat.

I have tried just about every damn lotion and potion you can think of. Covering him up really is the only option.

Agree on the turn out at night BUT the midges are most active at dawn and dusk so that would mean him coming back in at daybreak (first light and out again when it is dark. As he's in livery it's a bit difficult to do) If I had him at home I'd def give it a go.

Haven't seen the collar. I'll look it up and see if there are any reviews on it.

Hello you,

I've been on here honest. Just that the fun police here are out in full force and I have to be careful, in addition the home computer has stopped working!

Hope you and yours are all well hon. Mine's just back in work after a lay off with suspensory issues which 'fingers crossed' have been resolved. Slowly does it but he's coping with an hour of work per day. No jumping just yet, vet needs to come once more just to give us the ok so fingers crossed.

Will give the Megatek a go, thanks for that, just need to resolve the actual rubbing issues. It's such a pain, he's sooo beautiful (ok i'm biased) but the bald patches make me look like a really bad mum. Harsh since all I am trying to do is protect him from the damn midges.

I own the original mr sweet itch gelding, he suffers quite badly around now, BUT like you having tried all the potions, I gave one a go (on recommendation from a scientisty lady!) - try NETTEX Summer Salve, its £20 a tub yes, BUT it is waterproof, you only put it on every few days, it wont stop sweet itch but it will keep flys and midges away, soothe those itches and promotes hair growth, its still lasting a month later for us and having shampooed him the other day and still finding him a tad greasy it definately is water proof!

He is still itching but not to the point of making himself sore!!

Definately recommend it!!
