Hunter clipped, saddle patch. Has a bald patch on his withers, and on his chest/shoulder is nearly bald aswell. Brought a headless turnout snuggy hood. But if anything the rubbing on his chest has got worse, Also very itchy, scabby at the top of his neck/ mane. Although gone now since I sprayed pig oil on (which worked wonders). He could have been to hot? So I have changed his rug to a lightweight neck and a 200g rug, taken the snuggy hood off, It fits well from the video I watched. Would you put it back on? Any ideas? Also changed the rug he has been wearing for awhile ( no shoulder thing) thanks

I wouldn't bother using the snuggy hood if the rug has a neck cover I only use one or the other, never known the snuggy to rub though they are so lightweight and have really silky material inside, one of my horses can get rubbed shoulders so he wears a shoulder guard I use rug liners as well and everything is washed regularly which helps stop rubbing.

I would simply take the neck cover off. In fact, I think they are even worse for rubbing if they are a combo one, where the neck is fixed, as the rug moves with the horse's neck - as well as the fact that you can't choose to leave it off if the horse is hot. Hot manes go scurfy before balding.

I do have removable necks but they only actually go on if it is properly raining and cold, so the horse won't be too hot.

Some rugs are also tailored better. I like either a dart vertically or, even better, those rugs that have darts to follow the contours of the shoulders horizontally.

For shoulders, I like the silky chest covers, if the hair still rubs. They pop over the head and sit loose just on the front, so don't appreciably add to heat.
