Hi all, I'm adopting a pony from the RSPCA and am trying to be all prepared. I'm unsure of what size turnout rug to order he's a 2 yr old 12 hh gelding of cob type. I know I could call them and ask just don't want to bother them as I know how busy they are.

My advice is dont guess it

Either wait until he arrives or phone or visit to find out. Even if the rain suddenly arrives and is torrential he wont melt while a rug arrives or you can get to a tack shop

Examples of how different things can be -

My 11hh welshie = 4ft
Friends 10.3hh welshie = 4ft 9''

My old Welsh sec D = 5ft 3''
Friends Welsh sec D = 6ft

I wouldn't try guessing. Even though they are busy, i'm sure they wouldn't mind spending a minute to let you know his rug size.

My 16.1 TB is only in a 6ft sometimes a 6ft 3 rug and my old 13.2 welsh section C was a 6ft. So there is really no set size per height to go by to help.

Hi thanks for the advice, yes your both right would be too hit and miss. Something in me is so desperate to have everything ready for him! Will give them a call in the morning, unfortunately it's too far to pop in myself.

Lol, i was the same but after a year i have started to sell the stuff on ebay that I bought for my ponies before they arrived and which turned out to be unsuitable or the wrong size - i've just sold around £300 worth of stuff for around £50

Sit on your hands for now!

Oh my goodness! That is a bit of a loss. I've just stuck to the grooming stuff and lead reins etc for now but after the rain on sat I've been panicking about him getting sodden! This will be the first pony I've owned myself. My family had horses as I was growing up but it's been a few years!

I don't intend on rugging Him while the weather is like this. He hasn't had a good start in life as you can imagine so needs a bit of tlc. I just want to make him as comfortable as I possibly can.

Hi., i fully understand your desire to have everything ready for him., but i don't think a fully coated., well fed 2yr old cob type will need a rug. He will either grow out of it or trash it very quickly. An over rugged horse is an unhappy one, if he is cold he will move about but if he is hot he can't take his rug off (although I've heard some horses are very good at this) And they are amazingly waterproof, never seen one shrink yet :-P

If you just want to get him used to having a rug on for later in his life then just get a cheap or 2nd hand one for practice.

Im in the unfortunate position of rug desire, they are my favorite thing to browse online and instore, trouble is i have a hairy cob that is not in need of all the lovely super warm rugs that are available. So i have to satisfy myself with just window shopping, it does save me a lot of money though :-)

Enjoy your new pony x

Well they seemed to of survived in the wild pretty well without rugs and all the other bits and pieces we feel we must buy them. Maybe its just my mothering instincts coming out! A second hand one does seem like the way forward. He handles well at the moment and I need to carry on with getting him used to all the normal day to day things he may encounter. Thanks for all your advice and well wishes for the future. X
