We have an underweight 16.2hh full TB. He has started gaining weight very well and quite rapidly.
He has been in 6'0 rugs since we have had him- but yesterday I noticed his bum is sticking out the back of his full neck turnout rug quite a bit - esp when he is eating/head down.

I am just wondering if I should now buy a 6'3 or if this would drown him......

How big is your Tb and what size rug does he/she take and in what make/type?

Mine are both quite stocky, long backed horses. The 15.2hh takes a 6'3" and the 16.00hh takes 6'6"/6'9". Their rugs are mostly Horseware.

My girl is 16hh, and used to be 6'3" but takes a 6'6" now as she has gotten older and things have moved

I think you're better to get a rug size too big than too small - as it gives them more freedom of movement - we tend to fit rugs with the horse standing with head up, but when they graze the rug is pulled forward if it's too small.

My 17hh TB is very narrow and short-backed, and only takes a 6'3", but my 16.3 is stockier (pointer type) and takes 6'6" but I notice his bum sticks out of some rugs so would be better in a 6'9" in certain makes

Don't forget, unlike dog coats which are measured solely on length from collar to tail, horse rugs, being measured from the middle of the chest, take into account the width of the horse, so if he was underweight he might well have gone up a size as he's filled out

My 17hh lad has always been quite lean, but has muscled up quite well recently, and I noticed his one stable rug looks a much better fit now instead of hanging off him like it's his big brother's hand-me-down

My 16.1hh TB is average build and takes a 6'3'' in My friends much lighter framed mare takes a 6'6'' and when i tried a 6'3'' on her it was miles too small.

My full 15.2Tb takes 6ft in most rugs. However her Loveson heavyweight full neck stable rug is huge on her, she could of done with a 5'9, but her 6ft robinsons rainsheet is to small around the chest and she could of gone into 6'3. It all depends on the make I suppose
