Rug smugness?

Erin basically can’t wear a rug because she’s a sweaty girl (under -5°C and I’d probably stick a lightweight on). But Saus can wear a rug when it gets down to 0°C or below 5 with wind and rain.

I don’t know if this is a thing, but Saus seems awfully smug when she has a rug on and Erin doesn’t. She only seems like this when she’s got a rug on. Everyone who has seen her over the past few days has thought the same! It’s just something about her face and the way she’s moving that seems to convey a sense of smugness, as though she’s saying to Erin “hahaha, I have a rug and you don’t!”. 🤣

Does anyone else have horses who do this?

I misread the title as 'rug snugness' at first, reas it properly and thought 'smugness? that's strange, maybe it's a typo...' but nope! 🤣

Aside from that, I haven't personally seen it (or at least not that I can remember) but it does sound quite funny!

I have one that seems jealous when the other have rugs on and he didnt. They were clipped and he wasnt. He always pulled at tail flaps and was a general nuisance. This year he is also clipped and rugged and seems a lot better but maybe he has just grown up....

There was a study done where they taught horses to indicate if they wanted a rug on or not. So I can totally see a horse showing happiness/smugness about having a rug on when they wanted it.
Amber definitely has a favourite rug for this weather and others have commented on it too. I should really buy another one before they change the design.

Ours are certainly making it very clear atm that they don't want their rugs taken off. They are living out with a shelter and rarely wear rugs normally but have been doing so since before Christmas when the wind was from the east, as there is almost no natural shelter available.

My old dog was very obvious when he wanted his coat on. He had a really thick requisite one, and he’d virtually climb inside it when he thought he was too cold.

He loved being warm, and the coat always came out at lunch time. (Coldest part of the day in the house. Few hours before the fire was lit, and the heat stored up overnight had disappeared.)

Baggs did seem to gloat that for the past week he has been rocking a 400g turnout with 250g neck attached (20 year old, arthritis in hocks and stifles, feels the cold, shivers weight off fast, prone to extreme weight loss if not kept a close eye on) , and Rabbit had a 200g on with no neck (rising 3 year old, not in work, fairly good doer, prone to odd bit of weight loss when going through growth spurt) - it was so funny as I swore Baggs was strutting around like a peacock on parade at one point 🤣

The tables have turned now and Rabbit's got a 300g with a neck as it was getting down to minus temps which he isn't used to and as I was rugging Rabbit up, he made a point of pestering Baggs over the stable wall as if to say "I have a new rug and it's a heavyweight with a neck too bro!" 😅
