what's the best way to store rugs?

unfortunately I cannot keep them in the stable as my mare likes to pull them down..

i've got a rug rack that I need to put up in my lockup, but just wondering how other people store theirs? or is multiple rug racks the answer :D

thank you :) x

I have those big plastic garden chests. I keep them in our big hay/feed barn. Rugs being used daily go on rug racks outside stables (another one who can’t leave rugs in with one of the horses). I tend to do a summer and winter swap with what’s in the plastic chests and what’s on the racks.

aaa that's a fab idea about having a garden box! thank you! :)

Another one for Garden Box - If you have a local Freecycle website pop an advert up and see if anyone is getting rid of one for free. I got a huge one free from a family that thought it was ugly ! Its a brilliant storage box x

I invested in two. So I have one for turnout rugs and one for stable rugs. I fold rugs away in there when not needed, but they are easy to grab out if I decide I do need them. I’m planning on doing my rug switch around this weekend in readiness for winter/clipping. No doubt I’ll be evicting some spiders in the process!

I use plastic shelves so that I can see which rugs I have where but I'm lucky in that I have quite a lot of inside storage space.

I use the big water butts :) They re like dustbins but twice the size, I got them at a DIY store. Useful because they take up less floor space than the chest boxes and hold between 8 and 10 big rugs.

I have one of those huge galvanised feed bins with two compartments. Rugs on one side and unopened bags of feed on the other! Fabulous

I'm another garden box person but I also use the vacuum bags for ones I'm not going to use for a while to make them as small as possible - but they have to be completely dry going into them or they go very mouldy.

I have rug racks on a pulley system, so they can be pulled up high at the back of the stable. Rugs not in use, are cleaned and stored in bags at home.
Rugs that need to dry out quickly are brought home and hung on a homemade drying rack overnight.

I use dexion shelving, the rugs are folded /rolled and one can see at a glance what is there. I use the upper shelves to keep well off the ground.

I use vacuum bags. They are reasonably priced & after putting our "Henry" on them the air is removed & they get squashed down to nothing. You use a fraction of the space you were expecting to use and toy keep thewm dry & can put them on shelves, into storage boxes, anywhere really.

Im lucky to have a decent amount of storage at the yard. There are nails along one of the beams in my tack room so I hang them along the wall. I then have a further hay and feed store off one of my stables so any wet ones, or ones I use a lot get hung on nails in there, or thrown over my hay bales to dry out.
