Rug systems, yay or neigh?

I’m currently planning on getting my first horse in the next few months! I just wanted to come on here and ask what works best for people, having several turnout rugs or having a rug system? And either way, what brands have worked best for everyone? (shires, weatherbeeta, etc). I’d love some recommendations! Thanks.
 
liner systems with the odd backup cheap outer, in case one is soaking or ripped to shreds! i bought a 50g stable rug with the intention of buying liners for it, and my 4yo kindly pulled it off over her head and ripped it to shreds, so maybe wait to see what your new horse is like first🤣

shires tempest plus stable rugs have a 1200d outer which i’ve bought for the little madam now, but all my turnouts are a mix of weatherbeeta/horseware/swish/shires.

liners save a lot of time and money when it comes to washing, because they can just go in your home washing machine.
 
Rugs vary so much it depends on a horses attitude to them. You need a strong outer shell or they will get ripped. The choice is heavy denier that’s more expensive but less easy to damage and worth repairing or cheap and cheerful not guaranteed to last.
 
I'm going to try a liner system this year...ive got a rhino 100g and then a couple of different liners. As a backup I've also got a 200g rug and a 300g one for heavy winter.

Probably need another 100g in case it gets soaked though! My rug collection is ridiculous! Last year the 100g and 200g were the most used x
 
I love systems and have used them since their inception. The appeal to me is versatility, only one shell to clean/launder/repair, always having something clean, dry and hygienic next to my horse’s skin and the liners wash and dry like a dream. I buy Premier Equine Busters as I have Irish Draught horses and the generous cut suits them but I wouldn’t buy their less expensive models because they aren’t waterproof. I buy a 100 and 200 gram liners only and layer them on the very odd occasion a 300 gram liner is needed. I also buy out of season and on sale,
 
I’m a big fan of Bucas rugs. They’re expensive but are built to last, plus the quick dry lining is a god send in winter! I wouldn’t use anything else these days.
 
I like Swish or Shires for turn out rugs, but largely as they suit my boy's shape.

I prefer layer's/liner's rug as I find them more versatile and easier to wash and store so more practical.

But as other's have said, it does depend on the horse
 
I use mainly shires and weatherbeeta with liners and the snuggy hoods petticoats, I have shires, Derby house and swish liners they fit fine in all my turnout and stable rugs, I dont wash my turnout rugs I just brush the mud off then re proof with fabsil gold and they last a good few years.

I like the fact the inside of the rugs don't get dirty and I wash the liners my self so the horse has a nice clean rug on every week.
