As per my last thread about my horse pacing, my YOs and I have concluded that the horse's main bugbear here is the weather. She doesn't like the horizontal rain. She is currently turned out in a 100g Derby House rug with no neck, as I'm irrationally prejudiced against necks, thinking they restrict the horse's movement even more. She's lived over 19.5 years without a neck and it was never a thing in the States, but maybe she's getting grumpy in her old age. Aren't we all? After all, it's not me who's out in the p*ssing rain seven hours per day (and when it is, it's all Gore Tex, all the time). So I've decided the way to appease her is to get her a neck.

The horse is unclipped, so I don't want to go wild with fill. Her coat is somewhat thick, but very soft and silky. She doesn't get that oil in it which actually would make it waterproof.

Do I add a neck to the Derby House rug? It does not have neck attachments so would entail some modifications.

Or, do I invest in a new rug? Currently have my eyes on the Swish 200g rug. I don't want more than 200g and am wondering if even that would be overkill. Or maybe not. Otherwise, there are not many 100g with more than 600d on the outer shell. Just the Premier Equine ones, and while they are lovely, they cost an arm and a leg.

I would get a middle weight combo rug, saves messing about with buying a no neck rug and a neck attachment - works out more expensive too! If they fit correctly they shouldn't restrict any neck movement.

I don't like necks either unless clipped, but yeah a middleweight combo would prob be good for the much colder/wetter days and use the 100g on milder days...

I just bought a 180g 1800D axiom combo off eBay for less than £50 delivered. Best quality rug I've ever bought, generously cut and arrived 2 days after I bought it. Better quality than my premier equine rug and true to size unlike the PE!

I had a look at them. That's perfect -- not expensive but exactly what I want. Except my horse is really not going to squish easily into 6'6. She really needs 6'9 or 7'0. They don't seem to have ones bigger than 6'6.

They are very deep and generous around chest and neck - great for my late cut boys who are quite big up front
