Hi folkies.
I've been unable to buy Rug Wash in the usual shops.
Does anyone know if pure soap flakes would clean the rugs without deproofing them?
Thanks!

Ah nice to think positive things about yourself I always say.

My take was no-one likes you.....except me!!

Would you like me to have a look for Rug Wash in local tack shops for you and send some (if I can find some?)

When I had rugs that would fit in the washing machine (5ft 9 and under!) I just washed them in normal washing liquid and then sprayed with a re-proofer.

Well, if I wanted to use positive thinking in the face of all evidence to the contrary, you certainly would be my role model of choice.
I had assumed, obviously erroneously, that no-one would know a soap flake if it landed on their head, rather than the world hated me.
But if anyone out there hates me and knows, please post anyway

I'm hoping it's a temporary shortage...but you never know. When you say 'normal washing liquid' do you mean Persil or whatever? Did it do anything odd to the rugs?

Yes, ordinary Persil! No, didn't do anything odd apart from getting them clean and making you remember what colour they actually are!!!! Digressing slightly, isn't is sad when you turn out a horse in a band spanking new or just washed rug and they just HAVE to go and roll . . . . . .

I use non bio for my rugs, but I'm sure I saw some Rugwash in the tack shop at the weekend, could just be that people are buying it to get things clean now its getting colder and its sold out though!

The Horseware web site (I think, but haven't checked) says you may use pure soap flakes, which I interpret as Lux or Fairy Snow type soap flakes rather than Persil (even the non-bio, but I expect that's fine too). Anyway, I used them on new-ish rugs and they are fine.

Thanks re Persil.
Yes, turning a horse out in a sparkly clean rug only to watch it roll makes me cry.
I did once invent equine stabilisers, to stop them rolling...but was told it was cruel. Hrrrrmph. Now I just stand over them all day with a whip

Are you putting your rugs in your own washing machine?

Or taking them to the laundrette?

Normally I get them washed by a horse rug laundry in the village....but these are rugs without filling so fit in the machine...and it's cheaper to do them this way (they are also usually cleaner). Most of the large rugs don't fit...sometimes I power hose them (really cleans them) but I've been too busy this year.

I'm not even allowed to put saddle pads or horse boots in my washing machine - hubby would be most miffed if I did.

I'm ok on that front, OH wouldn't be able to identify the washing machine if you had him at gunpoint.

Well I had the exact same excuse as you when I lived in the UK - but since leaving him over there alone for a year and a half, unfortunately he now knows what they look like AND he knows when they are full up with horse hair in the filters.

I have a typical massive American washing machine and have often thought if he beggared off for a few days I could slip them in there without him noticing......
