How much do you pay for a standard rug wash/re-proof?

Any ideas on the cost of general repairs....say if one of the chest strap buckles has somehow been ripped off the rug (and you don't have the buckle to put back on)?

I nipped into the local saddlery place and was quoted £18.50 for a wash and re-proof and repairs are anything from £5 to £25, depending on what they quote when they've looked at it.

Now, if this was a £200 rug, it would be well worth the expense. However, this is Tweenie's little Saxon 1200 Medium weight Turnout.

Is it really awful of me that I am just considering chucking it and buying another rug upon hearing those prices? I could probably get a new one for under £40. The one she's got has lasted 3 1/2 years.

Sometimes you have to accept that in our 'throw away society' sometimes it is cheaper to discard & buy new than it is to repair. I hate waste but sometimes you can do little else.

I do however always remove any buckles, clips etc before discarding as they come in useful for any future repairs.

I think we pay £16 for a wash and reproof. A lady on our yard has just started doing her own rug repairs and washes as she was fed up of paying so much. However she only undercuts the opposition by a £1. Her repairs start from £5.

I think I paid £18 to have a front buckle put on, rip repaired and a NZ rug washed (not reproofed), as they wouldn't do the repairs without washing the rug. It was a freebie rug that one of the other liveries had thrown out, so I didn't mind too much... especially as I then sold it for £40 to another livery

For a saxon rug I'd probably get a new one too rather than get it repaired

Sounds about right to me. I wanted to get Daisy's rug repaired but it would have cost more than the rug was originally bought for to replace the broken straps so I just had it cleaned and I've kept it as a spare for desperate days. If you really want it mended could you wash and reproof it yourself and just pay for the repairs?
