Rug weights. Confused!

Hi. I hve a no fill 1200D weatherbeeta turnout. Recently bought a 50g fill 600D turnout for a bit extra warmth. He wore both during the snow and now back in the no fill.
The no fill actually weighs more than the 50g when you pick them up together. Which would be the warmer of the two rugs?

the 50g will be warmer regardless of the weight because there is filling in it, its probably just because the outer material is of a lighter denier that's my take on it anyway:0

1200D will be heavier just from the material itself, as D stands for Denier which is used to measure the thickness of the individual threads used to create the material. So 1200D treads will be twice as thick as 600D threads, if that makes sense?

However, the 50g fill is what will make the 600D warmer, as the 50g of filling inside provides a pocket between your horse and the outside of the rug for air to become trapped in, keeping your horse warmer.

I find the no fill turnouts are only useful in warm weather when it’s raining.

The weight is the weight for an area (I think it is a square metre) so if you had a no fill with a neck and more straps it could weigh more than a rug with a filler. Its supposed to indicate the warmth rather than the weight of the actual rug. Its like togs in quilts - a King size 4 tog may weigh less than a single Tog 20 (just examples, no idea if this is accuarate)

As others have said, the actual physical weight of the rug is not the same as the warmth of the rug so the 50g will be warmer than the no-fill rug and a 100g rug will be warmer than the 50g rug, etc.
