How many rugs do you have for winter, and what weights are they?

What is the weight of the first rug you put on your horse in autumn (after a clip)?

Too many. I have 3 (2 retired 1 ridden) they each have a lightweight, 100g, 200g, 250g, 300g and 350g with varying necks. I've also recently taken on my young niece's retired 12.2hh, she came with 2 lightweights and a 400g! The horror! I have already got her a 200g in the local sale though so I am less panicked about autumn now ;)
My ridden horse is a trad cob so he is usually naked or in a lightweight until his clipped (usually mid October) and then goes into his 100g for month or so and then into his 200/250g. He only wears his warmer rugs if it's very cold or wet.
Many have called me mad, but I like to be prepared!

I usually start clipping at the end of September or beginning of October. Horse usually has a week or so naked before going into her 75g rug. My heaviest rug is 300g and that's the one with a fixed nexk, the others either have no neck or detachable which is the same thing unless it's absolutely teeming down.

2 lightweight macs for rainy days, he might get a fleece under when it starts to get a bit nippy at night till the weather turns too wet to leave him out 24x7. Then he moves up to 100g, if we start getting freezing temps he wears a 170-200g m/w and that's as high as we go hes a paint horse no need to clip as he doesn't get fluffy and he over heats if I put more than 200g on him even in frost and -5! you'd think he was a wooley native bless him He wears a wool cooler or a lightweight stable rug overnight when hes in

This last winter Ted had a rain sheet, medium weight and a heavy weight with a neck. This year as he's grown I'm only buying a no fill turn out and a medium weight with a neck he gets to hot in a heavy weight no matter the temp. And I don't rug until December time unless it's really needed as he has a really good winter coat and don't want to mess with it or turn him into a pansy haha

Afraid I have collected far too many rugs over the years in sizes ranging from 3'6" to 7'3". If there is a weight that was made I've got it, with and without necks. However I now use either Rambo Duo or Premier Equine Trio and switch the liner according to the weather.

One day I will get around to selling the 100+ turnouts I don't use ......

generally ours have a no fill, 250g, 350 and then a 100g liner and 400g liner.

they all have detachable necks and the liners fit in all the rugs so we can swip and swop to make up anything from no fill to super duper HW extra warm.

stable rugs wise they all have a cotton sheet, thin fleece, thermatex, 100g, 200g, 300g and we do layer those to create in between weights/add warmth.

Archie has 2 lightweights, 2 mediumweights (200g) and a PE trio which is a 100g rug with extra 100g and 200g liners.

He normally wears a lightweight from mid-October (mainly to keep him clean) until he's clipped out fully at the end of November when he goes into a 200g. He's a bit of a pain to clip so we leave it as late as possible so that he only needs doing once a year. He also doesn't strictly need a full clip based on the work he does, but he's grey and I hate the white hair going everywhere when he moults in the spring. He's also very warm horse and even with the full clip is only in a 200g so it works for both of us. I'll only add the liner to make a 300g if it's very cold - he wore it for about 5 days last winter.

He then goes to 100g in about March and a lightweight when it's warmer. He's normally naked by mid-April or early May at the latest if it's very wet.

He has a 200g stable rug which he only wears when standing on the trailer at events, a heavy fleece for travelling in winter and a summer sheet for summer trips, a hi-viz exercise sheet and a fleece exercise sheet. I think I'm quite restrained really!

My boy wears a Amigo 200g after he's clipped in the autumn, a rainsheet during the day if its particularly warm. But as soon as it starts dipping colder, or particularly windy and wet he gets his Rambo 370g with full neck! And once he comes in for the winter, Amigo 300g stable rug- without a neck only to save rubbing out his mane! Then he has a newmarket fleece for travelling/ whenever a fleece is used, they're fab for clipped horses in the winter, super warm and no static! Also have the exercise sheet to match!

I feel a bit mean - he has one no fill or lightweight turn out rug I bought him the first year I had him, but he's worn it maybe twice in that year. Plus two stable rugs (a waffle cooler and thermatex). He is a hardy native pony & he has a slight variation of a trace clip, normally.
