Does anyone else own one ??

He ripped middle weight 2 weeks ago, not sure if mendable so bought replacement and see if old can be fixed as a spare.

Got doen yard this morning (don't see him during the week as he is on loan to RDA yard) and he has ripped his heavy weight and his new middle weight that he has only had for 2 weeks.

aaarrrgggghhhh !!! middle and heavy should be patchable, but at present his only rug with no ripp or tear is his lightweight and a thing stable rug !!!

he lives out 24/7 - so annoying. decided, next year he will not be clipped and can go nacked all year. !!!

Am i cruel ??

If you've got barbed wire, electric fence it.

Cat got his foot stuck in a barbed wire fence & nicked an artery & was extremely lukcy not to bleed to death. Also nicked a tendon sheath, which got infected, & severed a nerve.

He'd been a rug shredder, but after we electric fenced the barbed wire, he was out all winter & his rugs barely got a scratch on them.

My horse lives out all year round with no rug. so long as his field has adequate shelter he'll be fine and grow a very wooly coat to keep him warm. It's difficult to ride though in the winter coz he gets sweaty and then takes ages to dry off enough to put him back out.

The wierd thing is that there is no bardbed wire in fiield, anywhere !!!

That is the only problem, and why I clipped him cause he gets so hot and uncomfy in the witer when riding. I thinkg next year will leave clip until real bad and then only do under neck to inbetween legs !! and will i be ok then only rugging if real cold as in snow or frost ? or is that cruel ??

I think he is either scratching, doing it rolling, playing or the rugs are just falling apart really oddley !!!

Is he annoying any of the other horses?

I had a 4yo who didn't understand that my 30-something yr old mare didn't want to play with him... He would pester her until she got cross, lunged at him & grabbed his rug, & this made a little hole in the rug.

Cat made a v impressive 2 ft tear in the old mare's rug this year because he grabbed it in the middle of the back. That would have been another WTF??? unless I'd actually been there & witnessed it.

Yep, I have

Its been better since he's moved to a field with horses that don't enjoy ripping his rug! But he's still ripped 3. Not sure why or how he does it though

yep my 4 year old plays with my 30 year old too...touch wood has never ripped her rug, but my old pony is an electric fence wrecker...she will charge a fence and pull it right down...she will also just walk straight through it and just keep going until the whole lot is on the floor....!! anyone any tips on how to stop this..??

Twinkletoes, turn her out with no rug and attach the electric fence to the mains - it'll give her a nasty shock once but should make her think twice next time.

I had my fence wrecked every day by the cows and calves wanting the apples from the trees despite being out in an orchard of their own!

so last summer i plugged it into the mains supply and hey presto!

It stopped the little fella walking through it as well. He charges at the fence, puts his head underneath the bottom strand of electric, throws his head up and keeps going. generally the post come out of the ground and he's away!

Our old lady used to know that her mane insulated her from the fence and would shove her head and neck under it and lift it out, chuck it on the ground and then lead the others into the 'better' grass. lol The current big girl wrecks rugs ALL the time, with no barbed wire and the other three don't rip theirs at all.
