Rug wrecker

Just been up to see Oliver and one of the grooms told me that he's wrecked yet another rug. He only wears a fleece, cooler thingy in the stable because he gets too hot with anything else on so they are not exactly robust rugs to start with but I wish he could keep one intact for more than a week or two.

Usually I can stitch them up but he's really trashed this one. It was the pink one (bought because it was cheap). Do you think he's trying to tell me to get him a blue one?

he might be! bless! my mare is excellent with rugs, except for one particular rug which I have had to repair three times - she doesn't wear said rug anymore because I cannot be bothered to keep repairing it. So just got her another one. Such weird creatures.

Is he stabled all the time? is he quite big and playful? Just wondering how he rips them so easily, r u sure he's not catching them on something?

a big boy next to my mare rips big holes in his. with what i know at the yard maybe he's trying to say he's cold! he's fully clipped due to mud fever and wears the thinnest rugs that are about three sizes too small, unfortunately the woman that owns him has had him for 11 years and really does love him! but i think she would know his rug size by now!!

Hi, yes he is stabled all the time and is also big and playful. I can't see anything that he might be catching them on. My theory is that when he lies down he somehow catches the straps in his feet and sort of paws them off, ripping the rug as he goes. Never actually seen him do it of course. Wish I had a camera in his stable.

Do you think he might be cold? I'd hate to think that he was. I haven't clipped him so I thought he would be warm enough with a light rug. His ears always seem nice and warm when I go up in the mornings.

I have def got the right size rug because I measured him. It took a few attempts because tape measures are pretty scary things aren't they?!

I have tried doing the chest straps up pretty tight and the one he just wrecked had a belly strap which I also did up as tightly as I could without it being uncomfortable. Maybe, on second thoughts, he might be catching the straps on something? He has a big feed box for his haylage. I wonder if that could be the culprit? None of the other horses have this problem though but he is a bit on the clumsy side and regularly trips over his own hooves.

My friends horse rips fleeces, cotton summer sheets or if he gets too warm undresses himself somehow. Hes a big playful boy who gets bored in his stable. Hes never ripped his Rambo wug turnout though so she leaves that on all the time. We think he likes the sound of the cotton ripping, finds the fleeces so easy to destroy and gets great pleasure out of it but the Rambo is tough, fits really well so either hes comfy in it or its too tough to get any pleasure out of destroying.
