Hi everyone! So my new TB currently has a thick winter coat and I'm interested in clipping him using the 5mm covercote blades. He is currently unrugged, comes in at night, but I plan to start riding him a lot more often in the next weeks and want to know what weight rug I should put on him after he is clipped.

I'm originally from somewhere very warm, where rugging in winter isnt really popular and now live in Germany, so definitely need some advice :)

Thanks to you all!

It so depends on a lot of things I just clipped one of my Arab's with medium blades so shorter than your planning, whole body half a face and I leave legs on as mine tend to live out most of the time.

It's been between 8 and 12 degrees here so his had a 50g or 100g turnout with a neck on, if it gets colder he will have a 200g with neck on, if it snows and its freezing I will put up to 350g if I think he needs it.

It’s really going to depend on his age, body condition, weather and if he is naturally a warm/cool horse.

I’d be inclined to buy something like a Rambo duo and then you can adjust liners as you work it out

As others have said, it depends so much on the horse- if it isn't too wet you may find he's okay without a rug, but if you're riding more you may want him rugged anyway, so he's not coated in wet mud when you bring him in. I stick a no fill on any I have in work for convenience, if they are cold or start dropping weight I pop a heavier rug on.

If it helps, I hunter clip my native with medium blades so like pinkvboots will be shorter then you are planning (and I do leave legs and 1/2 face on) and he's generally been in a 50g this winter. I went up to 100g when we had a v.cold spell - I think we had lows of -7/8 a few nights.

If very wet or windy he has a neck cover but this gets removed when dry and still.

He's a hot horse generally so never needs as much rugging as others might do - he's generally mainly been in a 0g other winters but started to feel the cold a bit more this year as he's got older (he's late teens so fair enough!).

I bought a liner system so can just buy the next liner up when needed, which works out much better than needing to buy whole new rugs.

Totally depends on the horse. When fully clipped in the winter mine (warmblood) would be on around 650grm of rugs. So hugely different to the post above this.

Start with a 200grn, have the potential to add about 100grn and gmfwel.how warm or cold your horse is rather than go by what everyone else does.
