I'm horse hunting at the moment. I've found the livery yard I'd like to keep new horse at and have 'reserved' a stable with the YO, however I've one concern.

I'd be keeping the horse on assisted DIY with the YO checking, feeding and turning out in the morning, however she won't do rug changes (only check and straighten). Do any of you keep your horses in their TO rug overnight?

I would have at least 2 of the same rug so if the horse came in wet in the evening they could have a dry rug on while the other dried for the next evening.

Argh - why is it the little things that get complicated!

Yes it should be fine for the horse to stay in his TO rug over night, I've known plenty of people do this because they had nowhere to dry the things when they got wet.

Helga, I see you're in South Wales - so am I. Which Livery yard are you planning on using? PM me if you don't want it public.

I think it depends on the quality of the rug. All the Rambos, Fals etc are ideal for using 24/7.

Don't think I would use cheaper rugs 24/7 though.

I normally keep my horse in her turnout rug overnight if it is wet because it is the best way of drying the rug out. As long as you have a good quality, well-fitting turnout rug your horse should be fine wearing both in and out.

The rug must come off for a short time each day to allow the skin to breathe and give the horse a chance to scratch any itches but presumably you will be riding and or grooming your horse each evening anyway.

Also, change rugs every few days in case one rubs in a particular place (even if it is well-fitting, this can happen after a time). I swear by leaving wet rug on a horse to dry off because the convection from the horses body prevents any damp soaking down to the skin as well as drying the rug out - wet days tend to be milder too so you shouldn't need to worry about adding extra layers in the stable. Although, if your horse is full-clipped you may need to.

That is the same as our livery yard. We leave turnout rug on overnight and not had a problem. On a Friday & Satuday night she gets a stable rug on as YO doesn't do turnout for us at weekends. We brush the rugs, check & repair any damage ready for Sunday night again. Works fine for everyone on our yard (except one, she comes up each morning & does her own rugs).

I had the same problem a few years ago, and felt horrible for doing it, but we came through on so i wouldnt worry. And now my new horse lives out 24/7 so she is in her rug day and night, but i do make sure i take it off and cheak for any rubs.

Edited because I had 2 windows opened and posted the wrong thing in each one. Ahem.

Anyway - yes we have 18 hunters in Horseware rugs except when ridden each day. No harm done and they don't get rubs. Plus, rugs dry out much quicker on the horse than off.

Thanks everyone, it's silly how such a small detail can set me off worrying. I get the feeling that I'm going to be doing a lot more of this worrying before I settle down with a new horse!

Aww Helga its to be expected, LOL if your anything like me I over analyised everything before bringing my horse home!
I think I had enough stuff for 5 horses too!

Mine stay in their turnover rugs overnight - as long as they're not wet on the inside - without any problems at all. Also means the rug is far more likely to be dry the next morning than if it gets taken off and hung up.

I think I'm on something like my 24th list of essential items, some of which I know I won't need but can't knock off the list just in case!!!

Rugs and boots seem to be my biggest anticipate expense, think I'll need to give myself a severe talking to!

If you get a breathable rug then no problems with leaving on 24/7. I do with Pidge as all his rugs are breathable (he is very very spoilt and I DO have a rug addiction LOL) and I think he's probably warmer at night as I'm not putting on a cold indoor rug. Plus if it's wet it dries overnight with his body heat and I'm then not putting a wet rug on him in the morning. GOD DAMN IT I think I've just explained why I don't need the mountain of rugs I've got for him

Yep, mine live in their turnouts, but I do buy good ones. Fal or Rambo/Rhino.

I used to change them before I worked out that if you take a wet rug off the horse the wet comes through to the lining, but if you leave it on, the horses heat keeps the lining dry!

The only problem is, when you bring your horse in wet from the field, take the rug off to ride, then go to put it back on again, it will be wet underneath! Most annoying! Then you need to dry it out over night and put another rug on him.
