Do you rug your foals in winter or not? I would like to, just to get him used to it, but im a bit worried he would get caught up in it or something. What do others do?
I rugged mine last year as I prefer them living out with adlib hay than in. Just make sure the straps are done up properly and daily taking rug off to check for rubs etc.
We rugged my sister's tb when we got him as a weanling - he was really, really poor and desperately needed some weight on him so as we wanted to be careful about his feeding he was rugged to help.
Just introduce it gradually and once the foal is used to it check at least once a day. Make sure to check straps regularlu for sizing as they do grow quickly. I would also use a fillett string rather than leg straps on a foal.
No, I don't rug foals and TBH, it's a five minute job to teach them to wear a rug when they're older so not a thing to worry you about that it's not been done.
Saying that, my fields have pretty decent shelter from hedges; if I was somewhere barren and windswept with no protection I'd possibly rug but only in the very wet. They can stand wind and rain normally especially if they come in at night and can dry out, that's not a problem but they can't stand being persistently wet to the skin and not being able to move out of it.
