I have a rather nasty Saxon lightweight (no fill) turnout and my next rug up is a Weatherbeeta 100gm but I'm still looking for something inbetween. My horse is a native (Connie) and I find that when it gets colder and wet the no fill lw is not really warm enough but the 100g can be too warm until he is clipped (and sometimes even after he is clipped if weather is mild as he only has a low chaser). The only rugs I can find that are inbetween is this one http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...ange.html+bucas+50g&cd=17&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
and this one http://www.premierequine.co.uk/acatalog/Sale.html. The Bucas looks great and is bang inbetween at 50g, does anyone have this? The PE Buster Lite Extra looks good too but at 70g wonder if its not that much different in weight from my WB 100g? Anyone who has this rug, does it feel pretty lightweight? Another option is to get another no fill lw but one that is 1200d (Amigo) so more substantial than my current 600d rainsheet.
I did recently purchase a secondhand Fal Chieftain 40g but it was far too big and seemed quite a heavy rug for a 40g but it was 1200d outer, beautiful rug though

How about using a summer sheet or a thin cooler rug underneth, fleece??? Dont know on your choses of rug's as I use WB that's the only one's that fit mine well.

Yes could do, always worry bout under rugs slipping though. I love my WB, fits my boy well and reasonably priced, just wish they made one that was between the no fill and 100g

Ive just bought a Ruggles turnout rug that is really nice. Deep etc. Not sure if they have anything that might suit your needs but might be worth a look. Im over the moon with mine.

I've been luckly and havnt had a problem with using this way. Finger's cross. I tend to use thin stable rugs etc underneith TO rug's.

Have noticed a fleece lined t/o which I am quite temped to buy for my native type. It's an Equi-Theme Aircool T/O from Tackanory.co.uk sounds like it would be more comfortable than a no fill...anyone tried these?

I must be just cruel I'm afraid then! My connie x just has a lightweight no fill (add on a neck if it is cold/windy/rainy), then she goes up to a medium weight (200g) if needed. Nothing in between. Occasional days I might just pop a well fitting fleece or jersey cooler underneath, eg if she has just been clipped and would have normally had the lightweight on then I pop a fleece under. I already have too many rugs, so having them going up in 50g increments would mean I have millions!
Connies tend to be tough souls, so long as he is dry and has the wind off then I'm sure he will be just fine.

glosgirl, I'm sure you're right, I'm just being a softie! Think perhaps I'll just make do with what I've got and save my money!

I go through phases of thinking I am being harsh on her, but then I get worried and so go up the yard for an extra check and check her temp and she is always toasty warm! I put my hand in her elbow, and just inside the top of her back leg. She is lovely and snuggly on even chilly nights!! She is only in her fly rug atm, even with the cold nights she is gorgeously toasty! She is always happy as larry, munching away. Only time she feels the cold is if she is allowed to get wet through and there is a decent wind. So the lightweight sorts that out! Turns out I'm not harsh, she is just one tough cookie!!!

I`ve got both for my NF and they are both excellent rugs! If I had to choose one, it would have to be the 50g Bucas, it fits him beautifully.

i like the look of the bucas but i heard they are not that good for wide chested ponies and my NF is very broad across the front.

I have had both the PE 40g and 70g and the 40g one was perfect for what you described :) my hairy boy spent most of last winter in it! The 70g one only came out when it was blizzard conditions lol!

Brill, thanks for all your replies. Have looked at the rug at Tackanory and also the Swish one, both look great but not sure they have attachments for a neck cover and really wanted the option having a grey! But the Swish one especially looks a really good rug and a very reasonable price in the sale. The Bucas smart rug looks fab but out of my budget I'm afraid. And also looks like the PE 40g may be warm enough too, thanks everyone
