In an attempt to get organised for winter, I am looking for rugs for my new-ish mare. She's 15.3hh, cob x, quite long in the back & and nothing fits! :(

So far tried:

- 6'3 h/w rambo - too small (length-wise)
- 6'6 Rhinegold - too small, wouldn't even do up across her chest :o
- 6'6 Fal (not sure which style, older rug) - huge, massive on her all over.

Nothing else on our yard wears anything larger than 6'0, so I can't borrow for a try-on.

I really don't want to be paying postage costs to send rugs back that don't fit, or wasting any more money on 2nd hand rugs on ebay that I end up having to sell on.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? Which brands do you swear by? :)

well my idxtb (more like ID) was 15.3hh and long she was 6.6" and shires was fab for her- fitted lovely. amigo was good too, weatherbeeta and saxon were rubbish, along with rhinegold.

so try shires - their stormcheeta is nice rug

I have found that horseware and weatherbeeta come up a bit smaller than shires. I have also found weatherbeeta to be a bit bigger around the neck than horseware. I have been told that fal are good for chunky horses but have never owned a fal myself.

Maybe a 6'6" horseware or 6'3" fal?

Edit to add, my TB takes 6'3" horseware but fits a 6' shires perfectly.

Your horse might fit a 6'3" shires... possibly.

if you still have the 6'3 rug i may be interested in buying it what are you looking for it....i live in northern ireland btw :)

My mare sounds a similar build to yours. We have had a bit of a pig of a time getting rugs that fit nicely, I like the rugs to have a decent depth too so it doesn't look like she is wearing a mini skirt! I don't bother now with weatherbeta, derby house stable rugs or masta. In shires she is a 6'9'', rambo she is a 6'6'' (are a smidge short, but 6'9'' would be far too long, and the rest of the fit is good), derby house turnouts and fly rugs fit really nicely (6'6'' again) though the seperate neck covers are the strangest shape ever! JHL are also good (same as mark todd), though I forget what size in that.
It is really annoying trying to find what rugs suit different shapes. Do you have a local saddlery where you could borrow a rug, try it on over a cotton sheet and return if it doesn't fit?

Big Cob is quite long in the back (though he doesn't look it, strange). Anyhoo, I digress... he tends to have Weathabeeta or Masta rugs and they fit okay.

Dizzy has the same as they fit her as well. Typical DWB shoulder and half-a-rib-too-long back

She's 16.3hh and in a 6'9" usually; BC is about 15.2hh and in the same length.

Our rugs tend not to slip and on the whole tend not to rub the points of their shoulders :).

Whereabouts are you based? Maybe you could borrow one to try it before you buy :)

I find Premier Equine excellent for deep chested types - never had a problem with fit on chunky horses as the rugs are generous. As they have no seams I imagine slipping would be an issue on finger types.

I have found that I have to go up a size with the Rambo rugs with the middle ring that the clips do up on on their chest.

I tend to prefer the older style of fastening with the two central straps. If you have tried this type of Rambo and it is still a little short it might be worth trying it with a chest extender.

Premier Equine wont go near my deep chested MW, they wont fasten round his neck!, Horseware arent generous but fit my boy great in the size above. Fal are generous, well the old type are, did buy a cheaper Fal Cheiftan and that wouldnt fit in his normal size. I found weatherbeeta Generous and Shires not. Wouldnt buy Mast, mmm whats left:D. If you cant tell them Im officially a rug queen :D:D

My mare is a cob chunky and long - shes 14.2hh and 6ft 6!! Not ideal but shes a darling...the best rug by far I have found to fit is amigo. Also noticed recently they are doing amigo xl with extra shoulder room

Thanks all, sorry for late reply, just back from sorting my rug-less horse :p

I think I'll look for a 6'3 fal, just because I really like the way they last, & failing that try Shires & wetherbeeta.

MrsM, I'm in Wales, I have friends on the yard next door so might see if I can pinch any of theirs to try on ;)

suzanneand bayley, I'll be selling both the rambo & the fal, will pm you.

Thanks again all, better go find my cheque book :)
