my pony is quite fine and doesnt hve a thick coat other than on his belly! he's out 24/7 and has 2 shelters and trees. all thru the snow he had a standard neck mediumweight on and did fine. altho the last 2 weeks he's lost a little bit of weight. nothing drastic, he kinda looks jst right to me. he's getting double the feed he gets in summer, plus haylage.

today, the rain was lashing down and the wind was icey. when i got to the field, the younger ones were all going bonkers. when mine came to the gate, he was shivering his little sock off. i felt awful

anyway, i dried him off and put a full neck rug slightly thicker and bigger rug on him. i then worried incase they continued hooning about once i'd gone and he wud get too hot in it.

my question is, would he get too hot if he had a play about in the field? even in this weather. if this rain continues i think i'd be best to leave this rug on him. dont wanna find him shivering again.
 
Hi, Until recently my mare lived out 24/7 and had done for nearly 5 years and is IDxTB with a fine coat. She lives out very happily with a heavyweight combo rug during the coldest of weathers and then she moves into a mediumweight with an underrug when it gets a little warmer.
She is always hooning around when it is raining or windy and isnt uncomfortabley warm?!
Im sure your horse wont be uncomfortable and will probably be grateful as the rain at the moment is bitter!
 
thankyou, i can sleep better tonight. i worry too much, as i'm sure we all do. i wish he lived in my garden. altho he's almost within earshot, but thats far enough when i'm all tucked up inside with kids dog and cats.
 
I`ve been monitoring the "local" rug situation on all the horses I drive past everyday back and forth to work. Can I ask how all of you with welshies and the finer haired welsh x`s are rugging theirs? (polyfill g weighting also useful) We are right up high on an exposed location and it has made me wonder how I would be rugging if I had one up here (will be looking for a nice Sect D potentially end of year).

I've got a wesh x arab, I live on a hill, very exposed and mine lives out too!
He is in a medium weight without neck atm, but if its really windy and raining I will change to a heavy weight with neck. He's been fine all winter, not dropped any wieght at all

I find rugs with necks will keep horses alot warmer. My boy is too cold in a middleweight standard, but it ok in a middleweight with full neck... Not really sure why and maybe hes a bit weird, but if yours is too hot in a heavyweight full neck try attaching a neck to his middleweight. x
