Chico is currently out in a LW turnout with no neck. He was in a combo but neck cover has rubbed his neck and he has a sore patch so i dont want to use a combo again until it has healed.

However....it is getting colder and i would like to put him up to a MW - but i only have combo MWs.

I dont want to put a fleece etc under the LW as he has his turnout on all night so he can be turned out in it by YM - i think having layers on for effectively 24hr may slip and rug and he is quite sensitive.

I do however have a HW with no neck.

What would you advise??

I am in the Midlands.

I worry as the LW seems fine in the day but am concerned at night in the stable he might be getting cold.

He isnt clipped though so maybe he will be okay.....:o
 
yes he has a rug on in the stable but it is a turnout rug (not a stable rug) - the same rug he wears in the day.

Worried the rug will be warm enough in the day but not warm enough during the chilly nights
 
All mine are in LW's. :)

I would cut the neck off one of the MW's (I hate combos and neck covers as they always rub my horses' manes out) I would then take some of the binding off the neck cover and sew it on the 'cut' section on the rug.

Unless you are lucky enough to have this rug in a MW

because the join is fully bound, I have cut the necks of these and no sewing is needed. :D
 
My tbs been naked in stable the past fortnight, check him at 9pm and he's akways really warm. Going down to 6 tonight, thought I'd put him in a lw/mw depending on how he felt, but he was very warm! Ended up putting him in a thermatex! He's not clipped either and is normally a wimp! Think the haylage is keeping him warm!!
 
if his not clipped sure he will be fine in a LW. Mine is clipped and in a MW with no neck and he was too hot today so put him back in his LW
 
It isn't cold yet! They have hair for a reason, and if he isn't clipped he'd probably still be fine unrugged - without a rug, they fluff their hair up to keep themselves warm, and only in cold, wet, windy weather, and without shelter, will they struggle. Any rug flattens the coat, but if he's got used to wearing a LW it will be plenty warm enough until the weather is very much more wintry than it is at the moment.
 
If he's not clipped then he doesn't need a rug at all. My TBx has a belly and gullet clip and is out during the day, in at night. No rugs except a rainsheet if it's tipping down when he's turned out.

Without rugs their skin is so much healthier and toned. The tiny muscles in the skin that work to lift the hairs to keep in the heat are exercised and fit and the skin is healthy. With a rug on those muscles get lax and atrophy so the skin tone is not as good and they end up unable to keep themsleves warm by raising the hairs as efficiently.

Take his rugs off now while it's not too cold and he may be able to cope on is own.
 
We don't have rugs on ours yet. My cob came in from the field sweating yesterday morning
We all seem to over rug our horses because when we touch them they feel cool thats the way their coats work. I check under their elbow if thats warm their ok. Its not the cold or wet or wind but all three that gets them.
 
I wont take his LW rug off and put him out unrugged as he is currently under going extensive Liverpool cream treatment for his sarcoids and as such his immune system is under attack and he is feeling very sore and sorry for himself.

As he has no shelter in his field I feel it would be cruel of me to put him out unrugged as the yard is in a very exposed winy location.

He will stay with his LW on until the weather turns.
