rugging up

who is rugging up at the moment, i have 3 horses but only rugging 2.
the other is a NF foalie which is 6 months old without a rug and living out with them, i feel really bad that he has not got a rug on, would you rug him or harden him off this winter and see how he goes ?
 
Me - have been doing for weeks. In fact I've just upgraded their stable rugs to the next warmest. As for turnout there hasn't been many days this summer where they haven't had at least a lightweight turnout on. It's been a chilly year

Going to get down to 1 degree her tonight. So she has her thicker jamas on. She has just started to go fluffy so feeling the cold. But only lightweight turnout on in the field at the moment.
 
Tonight has been the first night I have put rugs on , Its to be -2 here tonight, So both Missy and tommy have their rugs on , they are in tonight and have been in for a week now .
 
We've had a balmy Indian summer here but I think its ended tonight - I was in the field at 7 and it was getting very nippy so put light rug on my TB for the first time. The rug is immaculately clean but no doubt that will be taken care of by the morning. Connemara Boy staying naked as he's nice and furry already.

Just been out in the yard with the dogs and its very chilly out there but lovely still night. We all howled at the full moon - in 8 minutes time hair will start to grow on my palms!

well i just got my little foal two rugs off ebay as i feel really bad leaving him without one on when the other two have theres on.
it is windy and raining here and about 8-9 out, just hope i dont make him into a wimp

My boy was a wimp when I got him and I tried him out without rugging one winter and he hated it...pacing up and down all the time, stressed and very grumpy. He turned into a different horse when I put a rug on him and now he is very happy in his mw all winter. I just have to be vigilant on the weather changes and rug accordingly. He is a Welsh native by the way!
 
Yep - have now started rugging Thumper.

Personally I wouldn't rug a NF - I'm sure that he will grow more than enough coat to cope. Although if it becomes very wet and windy again - then yes I might.....
 
We have recently moved and have no stables as yet so boys having to slum it outside....

Had lightweight rugs on during the day recently and medium rugs at night - my big warmblood was chilly last evening so put a stable on underneath (as too lazy to go home and get him a heavier NZ!) Small Dartmoor pony has no rugs ever and is suitably fluffy (and Fat!)

Winter is coming.....

Lightweights with barely no filling on at the mo, just to keep the chill off at night and obviously the rain.

Im trying to be strong this year and leave his medium weight off until Nov!
 
Mac lives out. He is Suffolk Punch cross and has got quite a winter coat on him, but has lost a little weight, so has a lightweight on now.

Dolly lives in. She is a cobby type, but doesn't get a winter coat. Put a thermatex on her last night for the first time.
 
Jack has been rugged at night for weeks now, only thin woollen rugs or waffles but he had two on last night because he was still cold at 6.30 and I just thought he's going to be freezing by 2 am. He is such a wimp lol. He also wears a lightweight out in the day.

I had to clip Pepper at the weekend because she was just wet and sweating all the time. Her coat was nearly two inches thick!! - i think we have a hard winter coming... Ofcourse now she's scalped she's cold at night so is wearing a summer sheet. You can't win with shetties.
 
We put lightweight rugs on last night, have 2 5month old welsh d's they are both out with no rugs and getting nice and furry!

Be is unclipped and just wearing a lightweight, shower sheet. It was cold last night though, and I'm now thinking I may put her middleweight on and try and get away without clipping her this year, or certainly not for as long as possible. Her old owners didn't clip her last year because she didn't grow enough coat, but then she will be staying out this year...
