Starting to think about rugs for winter now. . .how sad
frown.gif

I dont think i can really afford another stable rug as i have got to possibly buy another turnout so. . .i heard that people use duvet's?

I tried to find out about this but couldnt find anything other than a video that i had to pay for after 15 seconds.

Am i right in thinking you pull it up around their necks and cross over the front? do you secure with a surcingle? Anyone use a duvet to rug up?

Tips would be great! also how to do it would be great aswell

Thanks

I normally put a fleece on the bottom...then a duvet pulled up his neck and then a surcingle, then stable rug on top. To be honest those 3 layers "stick" together quite well don't find they really moved that much!

Do you use a particular heaviness? I know you can get something like a 5tog 10tog and a 13tog. . .does it really matter of best just to go for a middle thickness one?

Thanks

Are you or do you know someone who is handy with a needle and thread or sewing needle?

I believe you can make a stable rug out of a sleeping bag, and if you don't have an old one you can buy them for a tenner. Take the zip off, cut a semi circle in one of the short ends for it to go around the neck, and attach a buckle for the chest, and either cross straps for belly or use a surcingle.

You could always get one of those combination ones where you have something like a 7 tog and a 3 tog that pop fastener together, so you have the ultimate all in one light middle AND heavyweight all in one!

Ikea do those ones if thats any help.

When its really cold I have used a 13 tog duvet, but under the stable rug and held with a surcingle. Just have it coming up the neck a bit and cross the pieces over underneath the kneck. No sewing necessary!

Sorry you've got my creative juices going now...

You could do the semicircle to fit neck thing in a duvet, obviously, not just a sleeping bag

Have you got a fleece or summer sheet you can put underneath and maybe on top of too to keep duvet(s) clean?

Have you looked at robbies cheapo own brand and anything that might be in the sales at the moment or on ebay? If you're talking about buying a new duvet and spending time stitching etc you might just find something for a similar cost without the hassle.

If you do want to do your own I have a friend who is throwing away some rupped rugs at the moment, I might manage to salvage some straps etc for you if you like.

Naturally- that would be brilliant! if you dont mind doing that it is. I love being creative, i have allready made a rug for him once, it was so much fun

I could leave it on over night. . .but if it had tipped down all day i like having something dry and warm to stick on him

sure, I'll ask, and if you can PM me with your address and let me know what you ideally want I'll try to match up - e.g. breast buckles, cross straps etc. Can't guarantee anything mind, I don't know if she has already ditched them.

Duvets are brilliant and fairly cheap now, much cheaper than under rugs. As others have said you do need to use a summer sheet or fleece under them to stop them slipping. If you dont have one then buy a cheap duvet cover which will do the same job, try a charity shop for covers.

When I bought my last horse she was rugged with a duvet, plus a rug over the top to keep it in place. This was at a dealers. Looked a bit shabby but at least she was warm.

If you don't have an old duvet, Freecycle would be a good place to ask, as people often have that sort of thing that would be suitable for animals.

I bought my last horse duvet from Tescos for about £10 or so - it worked really well! If by any chance you are anywhere near me (south Herefordshire) then you are welcome to it - it is in the garage at the moment as I have no horse

we always used to have duvets and blankets as under rugs, just in the traditional way. Lay it on horse half way up the neck, fold the corners to the withers put the rug on top and fold the point back over the top. Found with our table top boys they don't move about too much but you can always bung an elastic surcingle on top.
