Rugs again - added warmth

My horse has only a short chaser clip at the moment though it will be increasing each time! He's only in a lightweight rug right now - I'm not sure how heavy (it came with him and I'm not well up on rugs yet!) but he's been warm enough so far - on really icy nights I've put him a fleece on underneath.

Unfortunately his fleece isn't the best fitting and rides backwards so it's really tight around his chest, so I'd like something else for the same purpose - fairly light, but an added bit of warmth whenever his current rug isn't enough, but it's not cold enough to move to the next rug.

What would you suggest? Another fleece? A lightweight quilted type thing? What sort of weight should I be looking? Again I'm not well up on rugs and what I need, and this is my first winter shopping so help much appreciated!
 
A 100g Horseware Duo liner. You can use them with other makes of rug, just clip the clips at the back to the rings of the rug where the leg straps/fillet string go and don't worry about the velcro loops on the neck.
 
I've seen one site comment that these fit a little small - would you agree? Do you think it's worth getting a size up or have you not found it a problem? Thanks!

I've seen people on here recommending putting a duvet under the rug..? Not tried it myself but seems like a good way to save money if you've got a manky old quilt lying around at home (can you tell we have?!) - plan on giving it a go when the temperatures really start to drop :)

H has been in his new (200g) Duo for the last few days. It is toasty warm and fits him perfectly (we do have the Duo rug, but I can see that it would fit inside most other makes). It seems true to size to me.

I think it was a bargain and will be useful if we have a really cold snap to fit inside his other warm rugs, if need be. I think, in the future, rather than replacing his current heavyweight etc, I will get more liners - far more versatile (you can layer them, easy to change the liner if the weather changes, you can put them in a normal, domestic washing machine etc).

I am well impressed!
 
I've sort of backed off this idea now since the best price I could get was around £40 for the 100g, which, I dunno, just felt a little steep. Perhaps because the turnouts I just got from Derby House were in the £50 range. I found an ok looking stable rug for £25 but then that was 250g and by that point I may as well just be using my middleweight rug, surely.

How much did you find yours for, MrsHutt? Or am I just too stingy to think £40 a bargain? :D
