Up until now I have always avoided buying 'wugs' or rugs with a raised neck, because I believed they could erode my horse's mane!

Can anyone tell me if that is the case?

Also, what is the point of these extended necks???

I am sure I am having a dumb day!

Extended necks to help stop rain running down round the shoulders. Also stop them pulling back on the withers. Yes they can rub mane but not as baddly as a full neck (IMO).

I have a mixture of rug shapes for my girls, and the 'high neck' ones fit better. They do, as someone else said, stop the rain running down their necks so stay drier, too.
I've never had any problem with 'mane erosion' other than when I let a full neck rug get a bit greasy, then mane stuck to it and was pulled out.

I have a full-neck stable rug and it did rub the mid-section of my horse's mane off last winter. I am looking to buy a stable rug, so am not worried about rain dripping down the neck. I do, however, find a lot of rugs too tight around his chest. Would the high wither help with this do you all think?? I am looking to purchase a MW that would sit under HW (that has full neck) when it gets colder.

i've never had a problem with the mane being rubbed at when they're grazing it kinda sticks more forward than down on their neck like a full neck

I used a hi neck (not full neck) rug on my show pony, because it fitted him better. I never had any problems with the main being rubbed at all. Different rugs, different horses I guess.
