I've just bought a new horse and he is absolutely drowned by my old boy's rugs so I'm trying to sort out a wardrobe for him. I'm looking for good quality rugs for as low a price as possible so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

Amigo. My horse has lived out in her amigo mio all winter and through all this rain too and it has never let her down. Fab fit, not too expensive and does the job!

I bought an allpro turnout for my boy when he was 3, was useless the first year, rain went straight through, but washed it at home in nikwax rug wash and then rug proof and it's been brilliant ever since, has even taken being rubbed along the brick wall of the stable and all the other punishment a 3yr old can dish out! Also it cost about the same as his fleece, around £20. I also bought a weatherbeeta freesyle med-light for the winter, it was the only rug he wore day and night all winter and I was really impressed with it- have always been a fan of weatherbeeta. I've heard wonderful things about horsewear/amigo rugs but they don't fit our horses round the shoulders so have never tried them. Good luck with the wardrobe!

I have been very impressed by JHL, i have a few and they have all stood up well to my warmblood cross hippo. Not that expensive either and fit really nicely.
Have had Fal in the past which was fab and lasted years. I have got a PE rug to use in the depths of winter, havnt had much use for it so far but i have been impressed so far :)

Amigo are good but with native types ive found some of them to come up a bit short round the belly.

I like weatherbeetas, amigos and my eBay rug!

I go fal through and through. I have had mine 11 years, replaced it this year, as it was a bit on the small side with layers underneath. Still waterproof, and she climbed through a barbed wire fence in it, with no damage to rug!

Search for axiom rugs on e-bay. My 180g combo has just done its third winter and is still going strong. Has been re-proofed once but will definitely see another winter out yet. I had mine for about £45 which is excellent considering the length of time I've had it bow. They also do 300g turnouts and various stable rugs :)

amigo rugs are very good, but only if you can find them at a good price ;)

i like robinsons rugs. they are very good prices and i bought a heavyweight rug in an online deal and lasted all winter without any wear or tear.

don't really recommend weatherbeeta. they do last but once they get a rip the whole rug seems to start falling apart. my horse got a tear in the front and i had to tie it up with bailer twine!

I love Amigo too, managed to have the foresight and time when new neddy came along to buy online from HVS out of season buying last seasons winter rugs in the summer! Excellent.

If your looking for turnouts the best piece of advice i can give you to save money is to spend a bit more if necessary and get as high a dernier as money will allow. They last SO much longer. I learnt this the hard way, 600 dernier lightweight (good make) lasted about a year and a half before it let the rain through even after wash and reproof, 1200 dernier 4 years later, still no leaks and it's yet to be reproofed. So although the second rug was more expensive than the first it worked out much much cheaper in the end. premeir equine IMO are the best for turnouts and if you need an entire wardrobe the cheapest option, though it may not seem it, is to buy the trio turnout. Mine lived in theirs all autumn, winter and now spring, stabled and turned out, just changed the liners for the temperature. So much cheaper than buying sets of LW, MW, HW turn outs and stables.
