Struggling with his shoulders/ neck to fit in any rugs nicely. Shires are too narrow, he has an Amigo 0g turnout which is nice and deep around his body and covers a nice amount of his bum but I feel like its too tight around his neck when he has his head up (strangely).

I'm contemplating Premier Equine but they are so expensive.

Any other recommendations? Only needs to be 0g/ 50g/ max 100g (don't think this will get used much) as he is chunky and quite warm.

I work for Weatherbeeta and have a giant horse so have the same problem haha. Have a look at our rugs with the Freedom System, they fit my boy perfectly. These would be the Premier Free, Ultra Tough and Ultra Cozi. They are cut slightly differently and are the perfect fit for a chunky set of shoulders.

I've a couple of old weatherbeeta from when you did a range for the larger types but haven't spotted your freedom system - might need to have a look because the normal weatherbeeta is a non starter for a part-bred draft.

OP - Amigo XL fits my part bred french draft as do Ruggles and Swish. She has the width and shoulders of a draft and weighs in at around 630kg for 15.1h and requires 6'6" in those ranges. For the full draft who has proper pulling shoulders its Big Horse range or Ruggles heavy horse.

Thank you. I've had a look but they all seem to be heavy weight/ medium weight and then only a 0g fill which I don't really want. Ideally looking for 50g and 100g with detachable necks :)

See I don't think he is *that* big really. I had Swish on my old boy (16.2hh warmblood) and found them really narrow (and he wasn't broad) which is odd. Such a pain in the proverbal. I hate rugs!

Mine has Weatherbeeta, Amigo XL or Ruggles which all fit well.

Personally I was disappointed with the quality of PE rugs so probably wouldn’t buy one again. It wasn’t that roomy round the neck either.

Ditto the suggestion to look at the Maxima Equestrian rugs - normally a good fit on cobs as they have fully adjustable front fastenings. They do 100g rugs, are all 1200 denier and are reasonably priced in comparison to PE. If you look on their FB page they have plenty of pics of them on cobs if you need to get an idea.

I wouldnt bother with PE, there is good shoulder room but looked like it would strangle my cob, the neck was so tight...he isnt even a heavy cob... I sent it back. It was super heavy as well!

I quiet like ruggles as they are really roomy.Have you tried an Amigo XL?

Horse in my profile pic has cheap as chips Rhinegold turnouts (the ones with stars), admittedly he has practically no shoulder, but they're nice and deep and loads more room to go at. Going into the third year with the oldest one, never even re-proofed it as yet, so great value.

I could never justify the cost of PE personally.

Yep - mine is half ID and is effin massive 😂

are their turnouts cut differently to their fly rugs? because I had one of the latter on my Fell and it didn't fit at all-it was fairly rubbish and I binned it.

I find they fit our stocky cobs with big necks. My cob is 15hh and in a 6ft 6 rug and they fit him well? I have not tried a fly rug though.

For cheap and cheerful, I got some no fil Gallop rugs from Amazon I think, they are pretty roomy and fit a varying range dales ponies here If needed

i bought a cheapish gallop rug for my loan horse but it was too big round the shoulders, she was half tb so i ended up selling it to someone on my yard who had a cob with big shoulders and it fitted him perfectly. it also had a detachable neck cover but i wasnt so pleased with that as it gapped at the withers on the half tb but cant remember how it was for the cob. it came in lighter weights as well.

The fly rug was no good on my tank of a cob, but the turnout with a separate neck fits nicely. The combo isn't so great, though. (For the record, the Amigo XL fly rug was a bit tight around her shoulders.)

I have a stocky 15.1hh tank who weighs in at around 575-610kg. His chest is enormous. He's in a 6'9 Weatherbeeta, which is just about right. The 6'9 Ruggles heavy horse is a little too big on him but I can at least shove other rugs under it when the weather is truly awful.

So I have shires, PE, Rambo and Amigo currently, bought this year or Autumn last year so all fairly new makes. Of those, the Amigo was the worst for shoulder room - like you mentioned it was very tight on the top of his neck - but that was fixed with a chest extender that’s been super so far. His PE turnout has enough room but only just, although I do really like it and have found it worth the money. Lots of people have mentioned they’re heavy, I found mine quite decent for a mid weight? Maybe different makes... Shires was fairly tight but is actually okay because it sits further up his neck, and the Rambo has been great. Rambo probably is the least tight out of those but for the money you expect to have no issues (I got mine free in a comp otherwise I couldn’t have justified it).
A cheap option is a narrower rug with a chest extender, there are waterproof ‘winter’ versions out there.
Oh and these are all on a half ID ISH with huuuuge muscly shoulders.

Weatherbeeta and Masta have always fit our cobs.

PE not a cat on doodahs chance, which is an amazing pity as I bought one of their super heavy duty turnout rugs for Titch... It will not fit the wee leg-at-each-corner-bobbo.

Thanks all.

We have tried (and had no luck with)

Amigo
Shires
Bucas
Derby House
Weatherbeeta standard neck

I'm losing the will to live :(
