Hi

My horse has recently turned into a bit of a rug trasher. He has gone through a fly rug and a light weight turnout in a matter of weeks.

He was in a field with lots of trees, and loved to wander through them, hence lots of rips. I attempted repairs. However, he is now in a different field without the trees to scratch on etc, and he is still ripping/breaking surcingles/buckles etc.

Both rugs were Rhinegold, so possibly a bit cheap? I want to replace with new rugs, but want to make sure they last.

So, recommendations for fly rugs and light weights please. I have seen some on premier equine website, anyone any experiences/recommendations?

I rate the Premier E ones, but then again my horse isn't a 'wrecker'... then again, my last one was a bit, er....clumsy and his Horseware ones were pretty tough....

Rambo all the way, not sure about a fly rug though as they are pretty easy to rip but after my horse was pretty much being lifted up and swung around by another horse and going through rugs in days, I took the plunge and bought a Rambo Wug and its still going strong 4 yrs on. I then bought the Rambo LW and that looks like new and on its 3rd year.

The Amigos ( not the 600d one), and Horseware rugs are pretty tough. Not so sure which fly rug apart from the Rambo sweetitch hoodie, are very tough. Trouble is the Rambo is quite expensive but the material its made from is tough.

I did think of an Amigo (1200d) what is the size like on them? He is usually a 6'6 but ocassionally a 6'9 depending on make.

Rambo's seem really expensive (value if they last I suppose) but would worry if he trashes it.

I find the Amigos quite accurate for size. Yes the Rambos are expensive but do last. Friend has the Hoodies for her horse, he scratches on the concrete doorway of his stable and you would never know. Very tough fabric..... but expensive..... but you do get what you pay for Im afraid.

I have a rug destroyer and can honestly say buying cheap rugs is false economy. I now save up and only buy Fals and Rambos which seem to last for years. My rug trasher has had his rambo supreme now for 5 years and only has two patches sewn on to it. Fal's are also really really tough, I've got fals which go on everything and are 10 yrs plus old.

I did the same, my rugs were trashed in days so kept buying cheap replacements as I couldnt bear the thought of an expensive rug being trashed too but it is a false economy.
One thing about the Fals, the cheaper ones arent as strong, check the deniers, anything not ripstop or less than say 1200d is a no no. I have the Fal warrior, it isnt like the 'proper' Fals and is patched, pulled etc. Rambos are made of Balistic Nylon which is as strong as you will get, not sure about the expensive Fals but they are massively different to the cheaper ones

Thanks all - I thought this would be the case, and I will start saving now! When I bought him he needed everything, so I bought cheap as I had to buy so many things, but it is true you get what you pay for!
