Can anyone recommend me a cheapish lightweight rug for a horse with HUGE shoulders please? My 16.2 IDx always had Fal rugs in the past which fit him really well, but although the middleweight ones seem to survive, he's got through 4 lightweights in the last 3 years so I don't want to buy him an expensive one again.

He's wears 6'9" which are the right size on him and fit him everywhere else but as his shoulders are so big and square we're having issues finding one to fit. So far I've tried Weatherbeeta, Masta and some really cheap ones I've never heard of and they all seem to rub his shoulders. It's costing me a fortune as they seem to fit and have plenty of room in them, but as soon as I put them on him and turn him out, they rub really badly after just one night, but as he's worn them I can't send them back. On the other hand if you get any rugs off me on E-bay you've got a bargain as they've only been worn once!

He's had one Amigo that fitted ok but it only seemed to be waterproof for 2 weeks and now leaks all over, and the Rhino/Rambo are just as expensive as the Fal ones so don't really want to spend money on them just for him trash them.

Somebody told me that Premier Equine rugs are very good, but she has a TB so I'm worried that they might not fit a chunkier horse? £50-70 is what I'm hoping to spend.

Any ideas please?

My boy has enormous shoulders and we've found the best fit and fairly inexpensive are Mark Todd :) However he has now managed to acquire a whole wardrobe of MT rugs :o ;)

I have this problem! I love horseware rugs (fit my tb a dream) but they're far too tight around the shoulders on my ID. Masta are pretty good for the chunkier horse, although I'm not a big fan myself. I do actually find Weatherbeeta ok though for him! I just buy the next size up! He has a tristar for the winter and it's got loads of room! It's strange as my tb also has a couple of weatherbeeta and they fit him nicely too! When I bought my ID he came with loads of ruggles rugs, very cheap and do fit nicely. No idea what the turnouts are like though. Have you thought about the horseware XL range? They're meant to be roomier than their normal ones and I think they do them in their Amigo range too now?!

Thanks - my issue with the Amigo is their lack of waterproofing rather than the fit! Weatherbeetas were terrible on my horse, rubbed his shoulder until they bled in just one night - he does seem to rub easily though!

Might give the Mark Todd ones a try, I always thought they were quite expensive but never really checked!

Oh I see, sorry. I find the opposite, I can't even do the amigos up easily on my ID! Wheras the weatherbeeta's are fine! It's very strange! Good luck with the MTs, I'v never tried them so have no idea what they're like!

Go for the premier equines. I have been really impressed as the majority of our grass liveries use them and they are thoroughly abused. They also seem to fit quite a variety of horses and fitted my wide ISH very well. I have, however invested in bibs now as well for mine any way! Rhino rugs are no good on anything but a skinny horse though. I also have Mark Todds which fit very well too.

Thanks, think I'll give the Premier Equine a try

Horseware rubs are suitable for TB types , Weatherbeeta rugs for medium types , Shires for broader , Masta or Kingshead for really broad , then Horseware Excel range . The Amigo range , the 600 denier range should be waterproof but the 1200 denier is guarenteed waterproof .

hi
I've got horses with broad fronts / big shoulders and the Masta rugs are great on them. Perhaps you need to go up a size? I find them offer more room in the front than other brands and not had any rubbing.
I think they are good value for the quality.

My lad is reasonably big round the shoulder and I mind Mark Todds and Masta both fit him nicely.

Weatherbeetas are fine if I go up a size and so are Shires. In his proper size in either of these he is a bit squished!

Strange, I found the masta and weatherbeetas to be worse than the horseware ones. I think half the problem is his shoulders aren't just big, they're set quite forward so if the rug has a big neck it slips back too far and sits on his shoulders. I think the horsewear fit as they're narrow on his neck which stops them slipping back and sitting on his shoulders. I need one with a small neck but wide shoulders! Have ordered a
