rugs for broad cob

i have a chunky irish cob and looking to buy him some new rugs ready for next winter when he will be living out, ive seen the usual FAL, Premier Equine etc are good however they are out of my current budget so im hoping for other suggestions

his mediumweight is a weatherbeeta which fits him quite well however this needs replacing and his lightweight was just a cheap rhinegold which doesnt fit him, i have seen a rambo amigo turnout online (in the sale too!) and was wondering if this would be a good fit as i saw good reviews from past posts from a few years back? got a bit confused as i thought rambo was once type and amigo another? there is also rambo amigo hero 6?

any help appreciated :)
 
I use a Rambo Excel (XL) on my big chap. The Amigo is a seperate type so no wonder you are confused. I see there is an Amigo XL now which must be the cheaper version of the Rambo Excel (although still pretty punchy pricewise). I have to say, have just forked out £167 for a new Rambo for another horse and it isn't a patch on the old Rambos or even Rhinos (that are still going strong 15 years later).
 
thanks, those who rate shire rugs - i see there is different kinds of them as well! any recommendations for a lightweight and medium weight? most common seems to be tempest lite? and the highlander as next step up? sometimes i wish they all did just one type of rug by each make! haha

I find Swish rugs to be the best value and fit for both my cobs. They have plenty of room in them and so far my boys have'nt damaged them. They play about quite a bit in the field and the rugs are still in one piece. Straps and clips have stayed put as well.
 
swish look very nice, quite high in the neck? would this not make it too tight on broad shoulders? but 1200D which is good! reasonable prices too
 
Interesting post. I have a very wide 14hh cob who came with a full complement of rhinegold rugs. I often wondered what they are like and would it be cost effective to buy for one season and throw away. Well, the answer is no. They just don't fit, the lining pokes out the back, the fittings are awful and fiddly to do up. The straps are realy thin tape so you cant push them through. The Velcro doesn't meet at the front, and I have sewn straps back on and replaced leg straps within days (on the light and mid weight) the heavy weight wont get used and will be going straight onto e-bay!

He will be having new rugs next year so will await people views. Our old cob fitted shires well and our little chuncky sec C used to have Weathabeeta
 
thats the same with his current rhinegold! just no good for cobs, weatherbeeta has been best fit so far but i am off to order some swish rugs as i emailed asking about how deep they were, is they had any feedback from cob owners etc and got a reply within 5 mins! so very impressed and they said if i try over clean fleece or similar i can return if they aren't a good fit, so definitely worth a go! PLUS 10% off code on their fb page!

My cob/dartmoor cross is very wide on the shoulders and they fit him well. I have tried all the usual makes and to be honest the Swish fit him the best. I have the no fill and the medium turnout. Also have fleeces for both my boys. All generous fit. They also delivery quickly and have a good customer service.
 
thats what i have just ordered the no fill and medium turnout with detachable neck cover :) excited for them to arrive now! customer service is brilliant!
 
I bought my lad a Masta DYnamix with neck 340 gramm so lovely and warm. Gutted he only wore it twice before I had to part with him for various reasons and it's too wide for the new boy. But - was a good fit and he was super wide! Will have to find somethingt o do with it ;)
