Rugs for cobs, reccommendations please

She's beautiful. Congratulations. I like amigo and Weatherbeeta for my chunky boy. Also have just got a shires tempest that fits him nicely but did go up a size from his usual.

I like weatherbeeta for my cob too. And actually - the Derby house rugs come up fine for the chunky ones and are a lot cheaper.

I have a real problem to get rugs to fit my quarter horse. He's very big in the shoulders and rear end! I've just bought him a Weatherbeeta Genero Wide, medium weight turnout, and it fits him a treat. Could have been a teeny bit bigger in the shoulder, but that's being really picky. Good quality, and at a tad under 56 quid, good value too. Got mine from PetnPony. Also got the Weatherbeeta Comfitec for my old boy. Also just under 56 quid from PetnPony. Very pleased with that one too.

Thankyou for the suggestion, I think maybe an Amigo hero, cob type.

Yes she is rather lovely and her nature is even nicer, all rather sudden though, saw and rode her yesterday and she arrives tomorrow!

Ruggles are excellent for chunky beasts. As are Axiom rugs off eBay, I have two mediumweights of theirs both 1800D excellent quality and added bonus that they have reflective piping all around the edge of the rug which makes spotting them in the field in the dark with a head torch super easy!

I prefer shires to horseware for fit for my cob. They are cheaper and they don't last the same but then, they are cheaper so I don't mind. They also come in funky patterns. Check out the chicken rug thread ;). She looks lovely. Good luck with her.

Derby House seem to be the only brand that got my cob properly, Shires, Weatherbeeta, Amigo and Ruggles are all too tight around his chest!
She looks lovely by the way, congratulations!

Weatherbeeta & ruggles fit my chunky mare really nicely,my bucas & horseware do not! I tried a shires as they're supposed to fit horses with a big front but the highlander was way too tight, she could barely move in it!

I'm eyeing up The Big Horse Shop as I really like a rug that covers the stomach as well as the body (much easier to clean as well as nicer for the horse) and I believe these all have good depth.

I enquired about that horse but decided she was just a bit too far away from me. Good luck with her. I'm a bit jealous!

She is lovely, not perfect as she is very green but great on the road and I only want a happy hacker. I have NO confidence but felt safe on her, current owners have had her at least 7 months and she's never put a foot wrong, lovely people too. Having travelled over 200 miles to look at horses in the past 11 miles away is nothing short of a miracle, she is forward going but has brakes and so sweet on the ground though I think we have a few things to work on which will be fun. She is coming down tomorrow and luckily the dentist was already booked for Tuesday so that will be interesting lol.

I've found Weatherbeeta to be a good fit on my traditional cob but it has to be the ones with the shoulder darts. I bought one without recently as it was cheaper and it only just has enough room at the shoulder.

Ruggles are best on my cob, and shetlands too. I do have a shires but it's only 600d outer where as ruggles are 1200d.

Weatherbeeta wide are brilliant as 1200d so stand up to much more than the 600d Amigo XL!
Just bought a LW for my massively wide cob and it fits a treat!
Loads of adjustment at the front too which was a selling point.

I don't have a cob but my horse is built like one massive shoulders and quarters. Amigos he destroys as they rub his shoulders too much even when I buy a size bigger. Weatherbeeta is better but again I have to buy a size bigger. Equidor are so far the only ones that fit him at his proper size and still offer enough shoulder width and best bit of all they are cheaper than all of the other brands and I have yet to have my rug destroyer horse rip one. The horseware ones he rips to shreds. You can also get one that covers the stomach but it is like a 500g one which I doubt you will need. Only rugs I can find cheaper are gallop and they fit too but at a size bigger and the quality isn't as good but he hasn't destroyed one or ripped one yet either.

Funnily enough every rug that I currently have being washed and repaired are amigo or Weatherbeeta ones. They just don't hold up as well against my horse or he just prefers the cheaper ones.

i have just bought 2 ( 150g stable rug and 50g outdoor rug) from the big horse shop, they fit really well and mine is a chunky girl. I did want the 80g stable rug as she is still too warm for the 150g but they are sold out till after crimbo so following this thread i have just ordered a ruggles one, they are really cheap in comparisson so we'll see what the fit is like, either i have bagged a bargain rug that fits or it will be yet another return!
