Rugs for Draft type Horse

The Shire on my yard has a .. wait for it... ;) Shires summer turnout - it seems to fit him reasonably well as it is quite deep and generous around the neck.

Try Premier Equines range as they are cut longer and are very well made and generously sized. I have a 17h heavyweight irish draught and they fit him so I guess they would fit a shire body? Weatherbeeta have some rugs up to 7' 6" but if your horse is quite chunky they can be a bit short at the sides.

Thanks for that, been searching the net, just found this site, www.thebighorseshop.co.uk looks like they specialise in the bigger horse, had a good look at the site, they sponsor Thwaites Shire Horses, so I guess their rugs should fit. Going to give them a try :) Let you know how I get on

That is an interesting link, I am lucky in that our past and present clydesdales fit well into Shires rugs, but they are small ones - Cairo was 16.2 and Farra is 16.3, so 7' rugs fit well - that said, Farra is six and still filling out.

I like the Shires rugs for them and my gypsy cobs as they are generous on the neck and fairly deep.

If it is only the chest that is the problem, you can buy chest expanders to fit to the front of the rug.

I have tried a few for my 18.1 shire x his girth is a 60inch so that gives an indication of depth, we use weatherbeetas I find them the best for his wide chest and deep girth. However I am going to look at that link as well lol you can never have enough.

Hi, my last horse was a very chunky Clydesdale x Cob and he always looked good in a Mark Todd rug or Weatherbeeta.
Avoid Rambo, Rhino or Amigos as they seem to be quite narrow across the chest but i think Rambo have brought out a new style of rug for the bigger horses but it's quite pricey!!!
In WB & MT rugs he was a 6'9" and Shires i had to use a 7'
Also avoid rugs with the neck all in one as they can be tight and rub on the withers...try and get a detachable neck cover as for some reason they seem to be bigger.
Check out Ebay or if your near Crewe in Cheshire there is a Equine Car Boot Sale on the 30th May and i'm sure you will get some bargains there?

Hi!

I have a 16.2 Shire x TB. He's not very long (6 foot 3 rugs) but IS very wide, and a little bit tubby <blush> My favourite rugs are Premier Equine, as they are nice and deep. He also fits Weatherbeetas quite well. I would avoid Mastas, as I find they give him rubs on the chest because they are not really wide enough.

I had a very tall very wide irish draft cross, Horseware make rugs ie Rambo etc which are very good, BUT they will also make you a chest expander, thats the best way I can describe it, they made three for me, one for each rug, and they cost, at that time the princely sum of £5 each, because you can measure your horse across the chest it means rug fits to quote "extremely well". I am sure you will be able to find telephone number on website. You can get away with just one Chest expander because they undo at each side.
