I was just wondering whether there was a standard size of foal rug to buy? Just in case this weather continues to be so very cold, at least having a little coat could help it get out (fingers crossed should everything go well).

Thanks,

Most manufacturers do foal rugs now. I go a selection from 3'6 to 4'6 for foals my favourite foal makes are weatherbeeta and whoever makes the rocky rug, they do a foal rocky which is good. If i had worked out to upload photos i'd post some pics of my foalies sporting their winter wear! I had a September foal last year that is out of a 16.3 mare by 14.2 stallion and he wore a 4ft weatherbeeta when he was born as it was the only one that fitted in the neck even thou it was a little long in the bod.

Hmmm... thanks for that.

Hannah is a 16.3hh IDxTB and Daddy will be a 16.1hh WB (but quite fine)

Any ideas???

It is just because it is so cold at the moment. I just want a turnout one for the time being so that I can get them both out in the field even if it is cold or wet.

we can't turn out in the school you see (it's being resurfaced at the moment so all posh and new) and we do not have anywhere covered to turn them out in.

Recomend the Weatherbeeta ones usually 3 ft 3 or 6 to start with.
Shires do some cracking minature pony rugs that fit foals really well.
Try Ebay quite often for sale on ther cheaply

Thanks... will have a look.

Think I would go for the 3'6" so it doesn't grow out of it too quickly, although only need it for first couple of weeks hopefully.

I'd get a couple just to be on the safe side, the late foal had a 4ft but that was because it was smaller in the neck but it was way too long for him, my older foal had a 3'9 at 3 months old he's by a 16.2 WB out of 16.2 WB. I try and buy mine on ebay on in sales or 2nd hand if I have too, i found a really good one last year that had an adjustable neck. If you can manage it get a couple do, i doubt you'll need smaller than 3'6 and shouldn't need bigger than 4' to start.

I saw a post on another forum about a foal almost getting killed after being caught up in a shires rug so you would probably be best avoiding that one.Its something to do with the design of the rug,but can't remember what. The weatherbeata rugs are good but I know alot of people prefer not to rug foals as it makes them hardier.

I will do that as soon as this weather sorts itself out... but I have also heard that their coats are not waterproof so you have to be careful having them out when it is throwing it down, and when the weather is as cold as it is at the moment.

Shires do a foal rug which i dint like at all.
The shires minature rugs we have got have x surcingles the same as weatherbeeta ones.
That said we still use some Lavernham ones that we have been using since 1995 and still going strong.
Never found anything as good.
A lot of people dont rug but we have since 1993 and never had any problems either with our own or visiting mares foals.

If you PM Josiejo, she still has the new rug I lent her for Denver; you're very welcome to borrow that if you like. Can't for the life of me remember what make/size it is but as I say, you're very welcome to it if she'll post it to you; you can send it back when you're finished with it later.

www.breeding-supplies.com do a foal rug, one size fits all, which helps to keep a new born foal warm and 3 sizes of ultra flex foal saver coats, which are made with techno-dry lining! This wicks water/sweat away from the skin, helping a new born or older foal stay warm and dry, it comes in baby pink or baby blue!

Yes, that's quite right. But apart from anything you don't actually want them to get cold and wet.

Foals on my yard are never rugged - unless ill - but equally are never put out in the pouring rain.

We don't have any indoor turnout available for horses, and they cannot go out in the school as it has been resurfaced. I would hate to keep a foal in 24/7 because it is raining, I would rather get it out for an hour in a little rug and then towel dry its neck when it comes in. At least Mum can stretch her legs and foalie have a run about.
