Ok im now not going to wean my foal properly till January - as the mare has to be introduced back into work very slowly !! I was going to do it in December but with Christmas etc a couple of weeks wont hurt !!

Anyway my mare isnt the warmest and gets cold easily - shall i just put a rug on my mare with no fillet string - should be ok in the stable ???

Our section d mare is rugged at night as she has sweetitch but foal has got clever and now every morning foal has removed rug ready to go out. clever really but does he have to stamp all over the rug too

oh bless - did you take teh fillet string off ?? x

Plenty of people rug their mares with foals at foot. Use string, preferably not baler twine, as won't break as easily as the proper stuff, for a fillet string, if you intend to use a TO rug. No fillet string really needed in the stable though.

thanks hun im thinking in her stable !! xx

My thoroughbred mare went to an excellent stud - and they were adamant that no mare with a foal should ever have a rug on - having seen several nasty accidents over the years because of it. I imagine that it might vary between breeds a bit - and TBs more stressy than some - but my mare managed fine without - she was in at nights and fed large amounts so didnt drop too much weight - and safely looked after 2 foals while there. And she was a mare who had spent her life stabled and rugged up, so shows how soon they adapt with good care.
