My boy is having an all over clip next week so that I can ride him when the weather is warm - he currently stands in field or stable with sweat running as soon as the temperature goes up.

Would I need to put a lightweight turnout on at night, or in the stable when its not hot?

what breeding is he?

We have our native (okay , he's a shetland

But he's in work! lol) fully clipped, and TBh I only stick a lightweight on when it's cold or when it rains (to prevent rainscald).

Personally I'd check him regularly for the first week, and gauge when he's hot / cold etc, and go from there.

My shettie is fully clipped and never wears a rug. I reckon you're cobby will be fine. The only thing that I would look out for rather than cold and rain is flies. Thats what bothers my shettie most when clipped. Plenty of fly spray

Do you ever have a problem with rainscald?

I've been panicking in this hot/ rainy weather, rug on one minute, he's boiling the next. Don't know wether to just leave rug off altogether?

I would leave it off....I think you're just creating an ideal environment for rainscald to get a hold.

Not with my shettie no. My little welshie gets it every year now in winter. Just a small strip on her back during the wettest winter months because she has such a thick coat it kind of retains the water!!
I wouldn't worry about rainscald at this time of year. Its warm enough that they dry off especially if they're clipped out. I bathed Tigger the other day and the water was just running off him. I couldn't get him wet!!LOL!!

Thanks for the replies - he is stabled during the day to keep the weight off and so that I can ride in afternoon without him being completly bloated. I'll dust off his lightweight turnout ready for rain.

definately have a LW t/out ready for the rain and i would say a fleece for the night in stable. thats what mine is wearing i fully clipped her last week and she is happy in that. ive had to put a LW stable rug on a few nights as at the moment its quite chilly at night.
