I have a heavy weight Suffolk Punch Cross Cob 15.3hh. He takes a 6'9 rug

on Thursday I put his nice new Mark Todd Medium Weight on him and tonight he has come in with it torn to shreds !!! Nice

He is out with a younger horse which H is currently having issues with - will be getting some NAF crib spray soon to solve the rug ripping

BUT - I cant keep forking out for Mark Todd rugs - they fit him brilliant but are expensive. Does anyone know of any other make that might even be worth a try. He has a very thick neck and is very wide in the chest so needs room to move (darts etc)

ANy ideas to save my bank balance a little.

Thanks guys

another vote here for the Weatherbeeta for chunky ones.
My 15.1 cob mare is in a 6'6" & this make fits her perfectly. The HW is a bit broader methinks from the MW, but she's happy - and so far has only got 1 small rip on it in the past month after her LW was shredded in mid Nov! (oops, shouldn't have typed that, should I!)
The only thing I''ve found is that the HW is also much deeper, tho the MW isn't too much on the short side for her.

Also have a 5'3" Weatherbeeta on the chunky little 12.2 - and thats fine for her too, tho the neck doesnt quite sit right - needing to be careful on very wet days (if we even have them!) as has had small dripping lines from top.

Good luck :)

If I had a hypothetically heavier horse, sort of like a large cob, I might say that some of the Premier Equine ones (with the detachable hoods) would fit ok.
On my hypothetically fat-necked horse, I do have to fasten the velcro about halfway to where it should be, if you follow, but it seems to stay on ok, and PE rugs are quite deep.
S :D

I have a ID heavyweight at 17.2 in a 7' Ruggles rug which is 1200d outer, very good as this particular horse always leans over the barbed wire fence and rips his rugs. Its stood up to it very well and is very roomy around the chest and has a decent depth to it. I bought a 7'3" rug made by gallop and it no way fitted him couldnt even do up the front so shall be ordering another one from Ruggles and they are quite reasonable too.
