What sort of rugs do you use on your thugs? I can see my 2yo being VERY expensive to keep dressed!

He's got a MW Rhino stable rug on and he has already bent the front buckles and torn the material around one of the surcingle clips. During the cold weather we put a liner in it, and he has actually torn one of the velcro fastenings off it !

I bought a cheap masta full neck fleece for him and although he is generally tied up when he's wearing it, he managed to tear that by pulling it through the bars of his stable from the rack outside and he's now torn the neck somehow.

His turnout rug has survived so far, but I'm dreading what he'll do to it when he's turned out in company in the spring (he's been very good in his little turnout pen, but he and his mate play like crazy through the bars of their stables so will be a nightmare in the field :D )

I've used Shires rugs on a similar thuggy creature in the past but he was a heavyweight hunter, and my 2yo is like a muscly TB in build so no sure how they'd fit?

Help!

My thug played constantly in the field and I was going through rugs at least one a fortnight. I took the plunge and bought a Rambo Wug and apart from the lining rippingas he was picked up by his mate by his rug, the outer is still going strong years later. Broke my heart spending so much but has been worth it. I use my turnouts in the stable too, maybe you should think about trying that.

Not sure if it is possible for you but I always used my others cast-offs for my rug wrecker. When one of the others rugs was damaged, I would use it on him so he never got the chance to wreck new ones.

does he need one on in the stable maybe leave him for a night without one then he might be less bothered about recking it, also if he does start ripping them when turned out i found putting elecric fencing around the oputside of the field works, so far this winter i haven't had one rug ripped (touch wood)

if you find an indestructable thug rug let me know! i have had my "thug" for just over 2 months & he is already on his 3rd rug! he's going out naked soon! & yes he is the coloured in my sig with the "butter wouldnt melt in his mouth" face

Me and my friend have our 3 in the Premier Equine Buster trio.
The 3 of them play daily and part of their play involves rug pulling......not just a little tug here and there but a real 'I've got a grip and I'm not going to let go no matter how fast you try to away' rug pull!!
The outer rugs have stood the test and there are no rips although one of the liners does have a tear or two.
Hope this helps :)

One of my horse constantly rips her rugs they last about 2 weeks and a rip appears! i have tried rhino, masda, shires ( which actually lasted longer than others even tho it was cheap!) and every other make. i have just ordered a premier equine which i hear is the best going at the mo! so heres hoping this one might last a little longer! :D:D

My boy used to wreck rugs but hopefully has finally grown out of it. I set up a permanant search on Ebay, stuck to my budget (incl. postage), and bought cheap rugs when they were there. Sometimes waited 2 or 3 months and then gor 2 in a week. He also wore rugs until they fell apart, rips, tears etc I repaired myself with pliating thread.

I've got two rambo extremes (well over £200 five years ago) and they have withstood everything. My thug just rips other peoples rugs so my cob is rugless I'm afraid even in -20.

Ruggles do good rugs quite reasonably priced 1200d outer, my youngster 17.2hh leans over the fence the top of which is barbed wire so has ripped the rug in the front and sides but it is still holding together enough to wear safely and this is the second winter he has had it on.

he he, this thread made me laugh, my mare is not a general 'rug thug' but I put her HW on yesterday so that her light weights could dry off, she is generally wearing 2 lw's this year since her HW could do with an update, well she thought it could do with a bit of an update too, obviously it wasn't good enough for her because I turned up tonight to see a neekid mare with the kneck rug part of a full turnout over her head and not much else on! consequently I am now looking for a new HW rug! LOL.

On the subject of thugs, I have always found rhino and amigo to be really hardwearing for thugs. Pickles used to trash anything cheap, I remember putting a brand new rug on him in the morning and it being in 3 pieces by th afternoon! I invested in a rhino and it was still very serviceable 5 years later (he used to go through about 3-4 rugs a year!

Thanks, do they fit well, ie no rubs, gotta a horse with very broad chest so could do with peeps thoughts on them. Like the look of the trio one, very handy winter and summer.

My friends 2 year old is filthy with her rugs and wrecks them. She is currently wearing cast offs from my horse and one of my friends other horses. I would recommend buying second hand as much as possible........ worth putting an ad in your local tack shop? I certainly would have given some of my old ones to someone in your position if my friend hadn't had a need for them.

My bucas Power turnout rug is the only one that my chap has not managed to rip at all.
Even when he managed to get the neck piece off ( stiching was faulty but bucas kindly replaced ) and pawed the neck piece in the mud on the ground with hs hoof it still did not rip.

His amerigo lasted about a season however did obtain holes in it which I had to patch up with gaffer tape, until eventually he managed to rip the whole lining.
