After resisting all last winter, I think this year am going to need to rug my yearling & foal. The foal is only 6 months so can fit in a foal rug but yearling is about 14hh so needs a grown up rug.

She is still quite weedy with a little chest so needs a rug with a small head hole & not too deep. Am thinking maybe a Saxon rug? Or Shires as they have the smallest neck holes? Between 150-200grms.

I think she is about a 5'3 which is annoying as I have loads of 4'6s & 5'9s typical

I found nothing fitted mine :( He was a 15 hander at just under 2 and the rugs that fit him in length just gaped at the neck and went down past his knees :( They were 5'9 and now he is in a 6'9 at rising 4 but i still have the same problem with the necks not fitting properly. Then because of that the shoulders dont fit properly so even with gussets, his long stride breaks them :( sorry, needed to vent. lol.

That's what am worried about Sam_1985 :(

whisp&willow, what breed is your youngster? Mine is welshxtbxfresian, & is mostly fresian looking in build, very tubular :)

mostly friesan looking in build you could be okay neckwise then. My boy is a WB and he was tall but skinny! My Saxon rug is smaller in the neck and fits him there but is too short. its always difficult with babies as they are not in proportion and foal rugs are waaaaay too small!

I use Amigos for my Shagya Arabs but also a French make, which has a trigger clip front fastening with two separate rings so chest can be made narrower or wider.

Just thought of a rug similar that has the two rings and buckles so that you get two things to adjust on the front. Ruggles sell them. They are a family company and they make their own rugs. My boys first rug was one of these and it was the one that fitted him best, because of the design of the front.

Ooo and Rollin....love arabs.....not seen a shagya for a while though!

If he is needing a 5'3 try a Mark Todd pony rug. They arent too deep and have a lot of adjustment at the front. We use them on foals and youngsters :)

sorry for late reply! my youngster is pba x sports horse. She has always been quite even growing- narrow chested, but other than that you could be forgiven for thinking she was a fully grown sports pony.

Thanks everyone, dispite buying my NF 'pony' rugs I didn't think to look at pony ones for yearling

Think will have to go to tack shop & compare necks as will probs be an adventure getting the rug on first time or two so won't be able to return it!

Now just have to find shop nearby that stocks horsewear, mark todd & weathetbeeta. Had look on Ruggles site, they look quite deep but might call & ask if the Shetland rugs they do might work :)

One problem solved, turns out foal is too big for foal rugs so tired my Shetlands 4'6 amigo on him & it fits a treat :D He was super brave bless him but didn't leave it on him as he is out at night & it was dark & want to watch he is ok out in it (his mum kicked him over when he was feeble baby wearing a rug so don't want a repeat, tho it would take a bulldozer to knock the chubster over now :D)

Have swiped a pile of little rugs from a friend so planning on wrestling his sister into one tomorrow :D the pile includes a Saxon, an Amigo, a masta, and a cuddly ponies rug. Have sizes from 4'9 to 5'9 so hoping one fits :D

hi ellie, hope all well, foaly is in a 5'3 mark todd medium weight and just bought the matching neck for the snow lol fits quite well double clips at chest xx in blue of course ha ha xx

Heres 2 of our foalies today, one is wearing an Amigo, the other a Knightrider, they are good cheap n cheerfull rugs, fit foals & youngsters well & have nylon lining
