hey looking for a rug for my new horse, decided on masta rug, that had bad reviews, rhinegold had raving reviews and now found some with rubbish, could anyone please reccomend a heavyweight rug (cheapish) that is true to the size please!

lol im so confused!!! :( n then decided on weatherbeeta but now who knows :( there was more bad than good on masta lol, just want something half decent that does what its supposed to!

I have a MW masta on big fuzzy, now going into its 2nd winter
Its very robust, has stood up to lots of tree-scrubbing  whereas the Mark Todd's dont :(
Its quite warm, doesnt rub and size is spot on.
Fittings are fine & adjust nicely.
However there is 1 downside........ its as much good as a paper umbella in any heavy rain  so we use it on cold days & nights. (its light shower proof only so we find)
Its otherwise that good I'm happy to leave it on 24/7 indoors & outside (unless its raining

at the end of the day it's up to you what you buy. I like derby house's rugs but a lot of people on here hate them :o
I've found weatherbeeta a bit on the small size in the past - think mini skirt and it was too tight round the chest.

for what I paid for it, the masta has turned out to be better value for money than weatherbeeta. he ripped that one after a week

have you looked on equestrian clearance?

I find weather beta rugs are good. Have also bought shires. Derby house sometimes have good deals on their own make rugs and they are ok too.

yeah i have thanks just want to get it right really, just want a good fitting rug (if it says its 6'0" then it is lol) that will keep her warm and dry over the winter

My masta stable rug is an absolutely awful fit so horsey wore that for all of about 5 minutes! The rug that really fit well for me are the jumpers horse line heavyweight turnout (from £77.99 from equestrian clearance) and also mark Todd but come at a much higher price.

I have been buying Rhinegolds for mine for a few years now. Cheap, yes. Some say cheap and nasty but I rate them. The Thor is 1000 denier and 350gms filling and ours are nice and toasty. I have young Warmblood thugs so rugs need to be hardwearing and I am happy with them. I use their Torrent lightweight rugs for spring and autumn showery days as well.

Op, is there any chance you could ask the people who have got her now, what rugs she's in? I've found different makes fit different shapes of horse (amigo for a TB , FalPro for an Arab for example). If not, you can end up wasting a fair bit of money buying rugs that don't fit or are too thick/thin for them. Good luck!

Got a weatherbeeta combo h/w turnout for xmas and it's a nice rug but have noticed a few small rips already 1 month on. My sister has the same rug and her's doesn't seem to hold up too well, she's had the rug lady out to it quite a few times and it's looking distincly patchy now
Personally I wouldn't bother with a neck cover for mine (new rug doesn't have one) but my mum likes her's coz she's got a pristine grey :D

I have a Saxon mw combo turnout, bought at Burghley for something daft like £35, and it is in its 3rd winter! Its great! I got it for a youngster we had at the time as it was cheap and only expected to fit for 1 winter. Turns out it was too broad round the shoulders for the boy, but it fits my cob mare beautifully. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled at Burghley this year, as its starting to look a bit threadbare, but it will do for my fast growing 3 year old (total rug wrecker!) for next winter before it gives up, and I'll be needing another for my gal!

Its all subjective - a brand that is a great fit for one horse will be terrible for another!

I have a mw masta and derby house both have been good but hate the liite clips on the front of the mast a rug drives me nuts when I'm in a hurry.

Someone on our yard has returned 2 masta stable rugs and 1 derby house turnout in the past month-weakly sewn straps that work loose and rubbish clips that broke within days. Buy cheap, buy twice?? She has replaced them with a Premier Equine (fantastic-well made, waterproof&will last! Excellent value in their sale too) and a Weatherbeeta. I'd get one with a neck or option to attach a neck-u may decide u want one at a later date?

However,I should add,my sister has just bought a masta turnout (can't remember which but fairly expensive) for her friesian. Fits him fab and seems a lot heavier, better quality than many other Mastas I've seen. I guess cos it was one of their expensive ones?

My premier equine boots were very disappointing 2 pairs not lasted more than month each before fell apart, so I wouldn't personally try their rugs.

I can only advise on rugs i have...

Amigo... longest lasting turnout my boy has had (although ripped to shreds now by rug destroyer)

Derby House.... never again, fastenings broke in 48hrs.

Shires stable rug... fits lovely but still has tags on so cant comment any further.

Mark todd(exercise rug).... not keen on the fit

LOAdsof ppl have recommended me premier equine and i intend to purchase one tomorrow!

PS my horse is tb x id (more id)

now really this depends on your type of horse as to the fit of each brand.

My favourites for a connemara x id are

Amigo - not the newer ones but the normal older heavyweights, however they do leave a gap between neck and wither sometimes and between neck and chest

FAVOURITE SO FAR is my JHL (jumpers horseline) heavyweight. I picked one up second hand for £10 got it cleaned and reproofed and it looks like new, done 4 weeks so far even in torrential rain and holding up well. It's a combo so no gaps, lovely weight and tough. I'll be looking to replace her medium amigo with a JHL. Also JHL much deeper than Amigo but by are the deepest is masta
