Rugs - help!!! - brands

Horseware Rambo turnout (NOT the cheap Amigo stuff), Rhino at a pinch (lower denier outer fabric). My Welsh D's original HW Rambo is now in its 13th winter, totally waterproof and has never needed any repair. Worth every penny and more. Doesn't slip, doesn't rub and doesn't leak.

Only thing is they are snug round the neck - I like that, fewer draughts - but I always use a size bigger than in say, Fal, which come up big.

Next favourite turnout is the Fal Viking or Goliath, you get what you pay for.

There are much cheaper rugs, and you'll replace them every couple of years. Buy good rugs in the first place and they will last.

Stable rugs, I really love the Weatherbeeta Belmont, beautiful fit, really warm, and again, no slipping or rubbing, but WB turnouts don't last like Rambos.

The Shires Chillcheeta isn't bad, never bought one but used to muck out for someone who used them. Don't touch Shires turnout rugs, they're absolute rubbish.

Masta have stupid patterns, stupid design faults and just don't fit. Aerborn Forester turnouts are nice but heavy when wet. The padded cotton lining is good for horses that dislike nylon linings.

I agree with every bad thing people are saying about MAsta turnouts. I cannot begin to imagine the shape of the horse the patterns are modeled on. At any rate, theyve never been anywhere near right on any of mine (maybe its my horses that are the funny shape :D)
I have a few Shires rugs and I think theyre ok for the price, ive had 3 years out of my ones so far with no rips.
Wetherbeata, Ive had one of these for several years now and its holding up very well. nothing more than the odd tiny mend needed. Its been value for money.

Saxon. Rubbish. And small fitting.
Derby House. Rubbish
Requisite. More rubbish. These 3 seem to have very cheap weak fittings. The Requisite one I have, the strap is wider than the buckle, so has to be squidged to fit through. Pretty basic stuff one would have thought, to have straps that actually fit through the buckles...

I cant think what else I have.

Id like to give PE a try, but would only buy in the sale, I dont want to pay fortunes for rugs.

In my opinion I find Rambos the best for my tb, all the Rambos are still going 5 years on. However, for my id they're much too tight for him! I don't rate weatherbeetas turnouts at all but their stable rugs are great. Dislike mastas also, except their stable rugs again.

i like masta rugs they seem to fit my wide sec D well, erm i have a shires full neck turnout at the mo which im finding really good, its lovely and snug on her and a perfect fit.
Ive gone off weatherbeeta simply because the shape doesnt suit her, and i cant even get amigos to fasten on her chest!! lol
I have a premier equine fleece which is really lovely i would definatly buy stable/ turnouts from there.
I think is definatly a case of trial an errord, you need to find out which suit your horses shape best i think .

I bought a lovely rug from Hzone at Your Horse live - very well made - nice and deep and a good overlap at the front and very reasonable - they have a web site you can buy online - highly recommend

Op, is there any chance you could ask the people who have got her now, what rugs she's in? I've found different makes fit different shapes of horse (amigo for a TB , FalPro for an Arab for example). If not, you can end up wasting a fair bit of money buying rugs that don't fit or are too thick/thin for them. Good luck!

I'd agree with this. Our cobs always wear Shires rugs which are brilliant for them. The fit isn't so good on our elderly welsh mountain tho (I've yet to find a rug that fits well on her, except Saxon, which fits OK but isnt deep enough, suggestions welcome!))

I don't get on with Masta, Weatherbeta or Premier Equine!! I only have Rambo, Rhino or Amigo. Just brought a Rambo Duo and very pleased. I have two Rhino plus rugs and some amigos one medium and three lightweights. Never had a problem with them and the lightweight have stood up to downpours without leaking. I think Premier Equine are like Marmite you either love ot hate them!!

Good idea, would have been helpful if Id said what animals Id had the rugs on :p

I got the WB for a welsh cob x TB, also the Saxon and Requiste/DH. The WB was good on him, Saxon up his backside and belly. The Saxon was later on a IDx ISH and fitted a bit better but was shredder by her (only a low denier one, bit useless).

Shires are on TBs, Anglos, ID x TB.

Masta was on an ISH (TB end of things).

Out of the rugs I've had, I would definitely recommend Weatherbeeta and Premier Equine. I've had both stable and turnout rugs from Weatherbeeta and they've never rubbed. My heavyweight orican is in it's fourth winter still waterproof and only had one tiny little rip in it. Haven't had the stormbuster from Premier Equine too long but the material is really good quality, not ripped at all and always dry and premier equine have a sale on atm :)

What! Not a single vote for Bucas. I have 16.2 WB and love them as they fit her so well that all her rugs are Bucas with the added bonus that the turnouts come with optional necks :)

Falpro all the way. Some good deals on ebay atm, got an end of line MW with detachable neck for £70. I also like ruggles (v good value and nice and deep) and have heard good things about swish equestrian and premier equine.

I've had a shires combo for about 6 years it's done very well but leaks now so time to retire it! I have a medium amigo that's very good rug. My mastabas stable rug has lasted a good 10 years still going strong. I got a Saxon combo rug and the clips broke not long after I had it :( so I'd recommend amigo and shires.

I love my Fal rugs. All mine have them from L/W turn outs to H/W ones plus they have stable rugs as well.

They last for years. One I have had for 15 years and it has gone from my yearling to now fitting on my little pony.

Alot depends on your horses shape too!
I have amigo rugs which fit my tb perfectly, bought one for the cob and its quite a bad fit, not enough room round the shoulders for her.

I think Weatherbeta's are rather poor I've had 3 t/o's all of which were ripped to shreds in no time. Rhinegold were so bad fitting I don't really know what horse they would fit! Lol I actually like Masta rugs I've got a heavy weight t/o which has lasted for years and still looks like new fits my Andalusian well also got some stable rugs from them and think they are good quality. Also have a Loveson fleece which is actually good quality it did surprise me also Saxon t/o has been good again I thought was cheap and nasty but the quality was actually quite good. Need to get a new medium t/o at the mo as the last of the weatherbeta rugs has been ripped to shreds!

My WB has had the same Weatherbeeta Orican heavyweight combo turnout for must be coming up its fifth winter now...saved up and bought him one when they first came on the market. Was a bit skint after buying my 2nd horse and he just got a Derby House Heavyweight for about 50 quid that came with a free fleece, thought it would last five minutes but must say he's in it again this winter and its been fab! Comfy, warm, no rubs, not leaked, good fit etc etc. Different brands for different types I recon though - don't think a DH rug would do up round my WB's belly!

yep, agree with everyone thats said master rugs. super tough and warm! and my weatherbeta taka is good but it did get a rip in it after a few days, that could be down the all the boys playing stallions a little bit too much

Further to my earlier post regarding Premier Equine rugs, I have since ordered two of their Buster 450X rugs which arrived this afternoon, by courier. They're fab! Daughter's horse is in his third winter with his Buster Trio, and is as good as new! Best of all, the rugs which arrived today were originally £130 but I've just bought them in the Premier Equine sale for less than £80 each! Oh, do love a bargain!

for jay the new masta's/old WB's & rambo's are the best fit, although he can take a 6'6 in WB but has to have a 6'9 in the rest.
fizz its cuddly pony or rhino wugs all the way.

ive got a 15.2 warmblood cross and love the fit of the amigo heavyweight, use it with the neck cover most of the time as i have a hippo!!!!! mine is a couple of years old and is completely waterproof and iis always in the right place(not hanging down one side) and doesnt cause any rubs at all. its my favourite rug and they are not too pricey...

I have a 15.2 fine thoroughbred.

The rugs I have and love are:

Weatherbeeta orican lw combo (only downside is the necks a bit generous) and a belmot hw stable rug fits perfectly.

Kadence mw combo (green check and a black with detach neck) fantastic! The green one is on its 3rd winter worn daily and still good as new. Also have one of their stable rugs - all 3for 100 quid.

I have just purchased a premier equine 200g combo and its lovely - good quality. I did go down a size though

Falpro are worth every penny iv had one 17 years no rips still waterproof and all my other are the same.I think their good for the bigger horses.

It is all down to personal choice and fit quality to your particular horse, as horses vary so much.
I think that Premier Equine are pretty much amongst the best available, I also like Masta and many Shires and Derby Houe rugs, but would put Rhinegoold near the bottom.
