Hi, Am wondering how much/what make rugs do i need to buy to keep my horses dry? Ours are out by night and in by day and cos of the rain had their turnouts on last night but when I brought them in they were soaked through. Both rugs are masta and under a year old, have been cleaned and mended earlier in the year and were reproofed. Do I really need to spend '00s on a falpro or somesuch? thanks for any advice

My two have got Masta lightweight turnouts on and they stay dry. Strange.

In my experience, the only rugs that don't leak are those made of balistic nylon. Polyester rugs are ok for the first year, but after being washed , they let in the water and re-proofing is a waste of time and money.I used the same Rambo rug for years, had it washed every year, never had it re-proofed and it never leaked. You can get cheaper balistic nylon rugs from Premiere Equine, I bought one last summer in the sale and it cost only £56, full price was less than £100 and it is a super rug.

oh that makes sense as my last horse had a rambo and it was fantastic, sounds like its the washing that has stopped them being so good. Have to try and bag a bargain (or two!) thanks.

PS am a newbie here, how do i say where i live etc in my signature???

agree 100% with this I'm afraid! You could always look for some second hand ones - I have a couple of fairly old Rambos which are still totally watertight, so you don't have to splash out on a new one to stay dry

Rambos are good and they come with a guarantee if you send off the card, so Horseware wouldn't do that unless the product lived up to its claims.

If you can bear not to wash and reproof outdoor rugs it's best, as they are never as good after the first wash even if professionally reproofed, in my experience anyway.

(By the way, my Fals leak, at least the lightweights.)

premier equines are good. Also for really heavy rain the rain sheets generally won't work very well. Go for the 40 or 70g rugs a sthe wee bit of fill keeps the rain out but won't be too warm. It is like having a single skinned tent compared to a double skinned tent!!!

It is more than likely that they are wet on the inside due to your horse getting hot. Test the rug by placing it over a bucket, putting your hand in to form a small dent, then fill this with water and leave for at least twelve hours.

I have never had a Masta leak.
