It's gotten cold here... My TB lives out (first winter to do so), he is in his m/w 200g, but I think it's time to step it up a little as he is hard to put and keep weight on and I don't want him cold. His h/w is 450g so I don't want to go to that weight until it's properly cold.... Can I use his fleece rug or do I need to buy a liner? Fleece has surcingles etc, won't slip, but do most people buy liners?

(and I am tying to rug based on daily temperatures but I can't get to the yard everyday so he is on assisted livery and gets checked morning and evening, I can't check exactly how cold or warm he is in middle of day)

Thanks!

I agree with Abbeygale - I don't like putting fleeces under turnouts. I use liners but then my turnouts are Rambo Duos or Prmier Equine Trios. Does your current rug have the fixings for a liner? If not you may be better off using a light weight stable rug under his runout.

i wouldnt use a fleece either, slightly different reason! if it does slip out the back of the rug and it gets wet, its just going to absorb loads of water and is going to make the horse colder, where he/she is damp! id double up with another turn out if that was my only option but if i were you id get another rug around 300g's? 450 is pretty heavy and a big differnce from 200! :)

Ok great, thanks for advise everyone... Off to scan the Internet for a 100g fill. He is in a horse ware amigo rug, so I think I can attach to that, but his heavy winter one is a premier equine and I had been meaning to stock up on liners for it!

I have just got a 150g amigo stable rug from ebay. I just got it a size smaller so it didn't overhang out the back of the turnout.

I have a couple of PE liners and just use the clips at the back to keep them in place. Never had a problem with them moving

Or lightweight stable rugs but as kerrieberrie said just watch they're not hanging out the back to much otherwise they get all soggy!!

Haven't use the Rambo liners so can't comment on those

Lightweight amigo rugs - keep an eye on rideaway website as they quite often have them on sale :)

I would use liners every time, much safer and comfortable for your horse and can be used under stable rugs too. No extra surcingles to get tangled up in. The Rambo ones and the Premier Equine ones aren't much different to eachother. What I do like about the PE ones is that they have the gram weight of the liner embroidered on the velcro fastenings at the chest. Otherwise not much if any difference atall.

I wouldn't use a normal thin fleece, but i do use a thermal quilted fleece (a heavyweight quilted fleece) on one of mine and find that stays in place well. The great thing about the fleece is it wicks away moisture, so I find if the weather turns warmer suddenly he doesn't get sweaty underneath. Although the edge can sometimes get wet if it shows below the turnout I don't find that it spreads any further up the rug.

On another I use lightweight stable rug under his turnout as it gets colder. This works well too, although he does get sweatier than the one in the fleece if the weather suddenly turns warmer.
