She was naked all through April, but our weather at the moment is a bit 'changeable'

Mine too! But he's back in a light weight with a neck as it's been so chilly and wet overnight.
I hate weather like this it makes rugging a nightmare!!

Well mine are out at night in during day now, they have rugs on and I have a coat on.Can't understand people who wear coats themself and put horses out naked, strange.

Coz horses are meant to live outside and we are not! You cannot even begin to compare how humans and horses have different requirements

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes horses and humans do have different requirements but every horse is an individual. Horses are designed to live outside but some feel the cold more than others.

heavy rain dont want to risk rain scald as he's got a thin summer coat as clip still outgrowing. would be stupid if i didnt particularly as he's a driving horse & rain scald across his back means i cant drive him!

Shadow has a l/w on tonight, she is out with a shelter but her summer coat is pretty much through already and she's a wimp who feels the cold and hates the rain!

We have had quite a bit of rain and horses have only just gone out overnight. I put a rug on Baron purely to keep him dry for when I go down and ride him. Its only a rainsheet though. If I knew I wasnt going to ride him the following day I would probably leave him without one on.

Agree that it varies from horse to horse, where you live, etc and common sense. I'm in Shetland (Northern Isles) and I have an unclipped welsh x t'bred who's got a LW on overnight as he is now out 24-7with lots of natural shelter, although he comes in at night if weather lousy (he hates persistent wind and rain). When I go up in the mornings 7.30ish he's pretty hot under his LW (Masta Zing) and we're sticking about 9 degrees during the day at the mo, even though he doesn't have a thick coat. On wet days he gets an Amigo summer rug (unlined) on as he hates getting wet. He is high on the wuss factor though! Although we are generally a few degrees cooler than the rest of the UK most horses here are now living out without rugs on at all.

No rugs for my girls - even the young TB, I would worry more that during the day when the sun does peep out they would get sweaty. I will only rug up if they feel cold or start looking fed up.

Ours have been naked since the warm weather came in April. However our field is exposed with no shelter and my MW cob had rain scald last year so for the last couple of days shes been wearing her Shires summer rug with no polyfilling just as a anorak to avoid it happening again.
The one day I left it off she was standing shivering by the gate wanting to come in half way through the day.

I do think it depends on each horse and their situation but as it is quite warm albeit wet I think a LW should be enough for most.

mine have been naked until this last deluge of rain, the old tb mare i look after has just about put on condition and i dont want it all shivered off again, the very lean distance mare ive been looking after was tucked up and shivering so i put a lw sheet on her too, but my 20 year old lad has been fine without anything on.

i dont see the harm in putting a sheet on a horse if it needs it, and the argument about horses being meant to live outside and we're not doesnt really work, since we have engineered horses to be so far from what they started as they cant all cope with the elements anymore

mine came in shivering after the big rain on Sunday despite rug and so I am keeping her rugged up on these rainy days - she just feels the cold and wet being a very sensitive TB lady ... she is just wearing a summer sheet though so she can't get too hot underneath ...
