Hi everyone - anyone got any tips this winter to stop my horse losing his mane from the rugs rubbing? He's an old TB who loses weight in the winter so I have to try and keep him nice and warm..... hence full neck rugs!
Last winter I used snuggy hoods and they were great! They have a mane protector in and have no seams etc where the mane lies. Ive got both a turnout one and a blue sheep fleece on for the night, they don't slip. Would definitely recommend them.
My lad rubs his mane out when stabled. Last winter we managed nearly a full mane!
I purchased a JHL Medium weight Combo Turnout Rug - Black / Tan Plaid for my 30 year old WB this time last year, it was a lovely fit on him, kept him warm and no damage to his mane. Unfortunately I also purchased a Rambo Duo Turnout Rug for Herbert and he sadly lost loads of mane, wish I had purchased 2 of the JHL instead.
Thanks for all your advice! I've tried doing a winter of mane and tail conditioner but my boy's mane is like candyfloss and falls out at any opportunity, I think I'll give the snuggy hoods a go and I'll definitely look into the JHL rugs....
I think fixed neck combo rugs are worse than a separate neck cover, they seem to sink down the neck a bit once you've used them for a while and make a kink in the material that puts pressure on the hair.
I use a strip if silky under skirt material sewn onto the fluffy bit that goes over the withers, it means rug slides over mane rather than drag over it. Once a week, I sponge down the front if the greasy rug down to the buckles, saves rug rubs in chest. Is you have all in one neck rugs, sew a bit of the sane silky material on the join. Hopefully no rubbed mane.
