Rugs rubbing -some advice please.

I need some advice on how to stop rugs rubbing on a horses shoulders .He is a 15.2 full TB and already wears a purpose made bib(mark todd ) that is supposed to stop rubbing .It doesnt work for him as he now has no hair on his shoulders at all and i am worried they are sore and will get worse.
He has to be well rugged to prevent him getting cold and dropping weight .
Can you suggest any thing i can either sew in the inside of his rugs or bib , or even a bib which is more successful than the one i am using .

the w'undercover ones are brilliant, they are 2-layer (inner layer is slippery nylon, outer layer is firmer nylon mesh for the rug to slide over), no rubbing at all. i've had all mine for years. if you can't get one anywhere, pm me if desperate and you can try or buy one of mine.
if your rug is nylon lined, it shouldn't rub anyway...
 
What rugs does he have on? Ive always found combos/full neck rugs to rub less, also found horseware rugs very good on my big shouldered Tb.
 
I have, over the years tried all sorts of bibs. Yhe only one that works for mine is Bossy Bibs. They advertise in H&H. Not expensive either.

I have a snuggy hood which includes the bib. Its great for stopping rubbing everywhere on my WB.

Have you thought about a different rug?

I have found Premier Equine and GFS rugs are a great fit at the front. Much deeper and don't seem to rub.
 
We use on both our mares (one being a 15.2hh tb) the shires fleece vest, they both turn out in it fine and it works wonders. Esp for the tb. Very economically priced and nice and cosy.

We cannot use full neck/combo rugs on her though as they rub her withers too much and she gets sore there from all the weight of the rugs pulling down on them.
 
We never use bibs. All rugs get a large patch of heavy satin fabric sewn on the shoulder area that would rub by our local rug repair person. No seams or stiching anywhere except the very outside edges. The satin fabric creates a nice "slip" and allows the movement of the shoulder independently of the rug. Have done this for years on everything from ponies to show horses and our 17.3 hunters. Not one sign of a rub patch ever.
 
if you rug is slightly on the big side it may be pulling back.have you tried the next size down but have the buckes not so tight?
or
the next size up but make more holes on the breast straps.

sorry,not much help but worth a try.different makes vary too.i like combos best.
 
Bossy's bibs are the way forward. My horse had bald shoulders every year and I tried so many vests/bibs that did nothing but after buying a bossy's bib my meare has never had a bald patch since and the bib is about 5 years old now and still folding together well!
 
Another vote for BossyBibs. Obviously rug fit is an issue but I've had a few horses that just seemed prone, even in a rug that didn't bind or pull or otherwise cause discomfort, and this has been the answer for them. I found the elastic ones, like Wunderwear, rubbed at the withers or behind the elbows.
 
Ive got a Shires fleece bib and cant fault it at all, ive had it for 2 yrs and its never left a rub rub mark in sight.
It fit snug on my 16hh tb x who has high shoulders and is broad along the chest.
 
Another fan of Bossy Bibs here. They are excellent to deal with and if you phone the actual company themselves they often have slight seconds for sale too.
 
i have found that using rugs with a double shoulder gusset thingy helps prevent rubbing and if that dont work i put a bin liner sewn into the shoulder but it has to be double layered it always worked when i was abroad with my horses. good luck and if you need to encourage hair regrowth try coconut oil but be warned if he is bald now in all likely hood it will be like it now til rugs come off but you can stop it getting any worse.

Yet another Bossy Bib fan! I tried numerous other sorts of bibs, but these are the only ones which have worked for M.
